stupid accident

managed to rip my jeans today using a rechargeable drill with a masonary bit in it it was in the van laid on some gear I went in back of van and pressed up on the drill it started up and the bit screwed up on my jeans ripped open and trapped my skin was lucky to stop it before it went in /half hour earlier it had a steel twist drill in that would have cut in nicely . just be carefull leaving bits in rechargheables and put them away when finished

I did that once, nice Brad point bit in my knee, thankfully had decent trousers on with reenforced knees but the point hit just skin as I realised what was happening

A mate was 'helping' me make some doors for him, and somehow he got an inch spade bit caught in his trousers, by the knee, very quickly a 3" wide strip of fabric wrapped around the bit as it moved inexorably closer to his nethers... luckily it jammed up before it bit him, but he was still standing there in utter shock, holding the trigger tightly and the drill making that NNNNNNggggggg noise of a stuck motor. He was looking at me in utter terror, and was unable to take in what had happened and what nearly happened.
'Let go.' I said. He did and as soon as the noise stopped the tension went too, and swearing and mickey taking started.

I did something similar trying to move all my kit from one work area to another. Luckily it was on the low speed gear and I only just pushed the trigger in so it was slowly pulling in my shirt until I could put the stuff down.

Currently sporting a 3 inch long burn down my chest from molten silver solder. Things we do for the job in hand.

None of my work hoodies have the pull cords on anymore for this reason. Wouldn't want to get one caught in a saw ect. Caught my planer bag in the blades once. That tightly wrapped I had to strip the tool to remove it. If that was a T-shirt.....
Never wear loose clothing when working.

Worn a baggy t shirt one summer whilst using a wire brush in a drill to remove rust from steel plate, next minute the t shirt is getting sucked into a vortex of craziness over my stomach... managed to wind itself to a stop, still shook me up. Lesson learned.

On the subject of masonry bits, I used a 12" bit to drill anchor points and without thinking tapped my leg upon taking it out. Chevrons up my leg for weeks after! It didn't even hurt much, just felt like being pinched

I was working in a tunnel once and there were some guys in the invert (the space under the road) drilling holes with a hilti drill. One was in a very low headroom section and to move along to a new location he would crawl commando-style with the drill in front of him. He got fed up with going back for the lead so left it plugged in. Of course he squeezed the trigger whilst crawling and wound his glove round the bit dislocating all his fingers on one hand.

Many moons ago I saw the brother in law wrapping a mains drill cord around the drill to pack it away,
He wrapped the flex around the trigger and it started going ,grabbed his shirt and the handle smacked him in the gob
Who in there right mind would wrap a power tool up with it still plugged in

I've got in the habit of the batteries out of portable tools when I put them in vehicles, bags etc - if only 'cos the noise of the things running when they shift slightly and the trigger gets depressed annoys me . . .

Only ever had a few accidents with tools but the worst was taking the flywheel of a broomwade AC41 compressor pump, I was leaning over tapping it with a sledge hammer and to save damage my mate was holding some wood on the flywheel, Well he dropped the wood and i hit myself square in the groin, i was down for a good 5 minutes and walked like a zombie for a few days.

One of the first things I did as a small lad was to drill a hole through some sheet metal laying on My lap. Drill bit augered it's way in. End of story and You don't get any pictures.

I posted a pic on here years ago when I was using a wire cup brush in a grinder and it snagged, kicked back and hit me in the groin.
Made a mess of my overalls but fortunately that was all.
