Farm near us had eggs and honesty box stolen by someone passing in a car, now you have to knock on the door and hand over money.

The egg dispenser is on CCTV which may help. I Also made the box overhang the wall at the back so I can fit a secure money box away from the roadside. I would probably have to fit a coin slot and pipe to take the money to the box, it would be like an egg vending machine

I hope it doesn't come to that. I do know a farmer who has had their eggs and money nicked too and they aren't too far away, but are on a much busier road.

At this time of year, one every day or every other day, less as they get older. They slow down/stop through winter. We used to have a hen that on 3 different years, stopped laying in about October, laid a single egg on christmas day, then wouldn't lay another til about late March. It was quite unusual.

This is exactly what it's like.

Also, just to add, breed makes a difference; commercial laying hens will pump an egg out every day for a shorter amount of lifetime compared to a older breed which maybe does 100 a year (spread over the lighter months, usually ) but for more years of their life. Chickens, like humans, have a finite amount of eggs per lifespan. Unlike us, they can stash sperm for about a month and choose whether to send it to an egg or not when in the oviduct. There's loads of cool stuff like that but as it's anatomical here is not the place.

Edit - the production is controlled via the pituitary gland, located behind and the rear of the eyes. Sunny / bright periods will make them want to lay if they can or go 'broody' which is when they would rather sit on the eggs and incubate them than the usual which is to fire one out and be done with it. Maybe have a nice loud egg song as well

To bring the thread back onto subject, I knocked up another special to remove tge valve from a Ronson gas lighter.
A pice of scrap brass and about 30 minutes faffing. Et voila
