Finally manoeuvred my new_to_me drill organiser into it's new home, it required building a stand:



Gareth meanwhile had to repair the Millenium Falcon, he likes a treat:



I didn't envy him, someone had mis-folded this in 3mm 316 so they were trying to recover the job, too much money in it to start again, why they didn't just give him the work in the first place I have no idea. Anyhow, back to the plot. All welded up and a rattle can:

Had to clear the whole corner out in order to start again:



Put the carcass up then put the drawers back in, this height is carefully calculated to allow me to open a drawer and actually see what's in it:



Then put everything back:



There was one mishap where I dropped one of the 'Raco' drawers and even after ten minutes of Tetris I couldn't get the little containers back in in order, need to do a bit of research:



Now all I need to do is work out what to put where, this should provide hours of entertainment!

Earlier I knocked up a mounting for my Webasto diesel heater. Where (I think) I'm installing it in the van I need to go through 12mm lly and another 25mm of insulation & batten before getting to the floor pan - so I thought I'd make an ovalled "tunnel" mount so the heater body will stand proud of the insulated floor rather than me cut a huge chunk of it out.

I had a piece of stainless steel offcut left from the galley kitchen splashback. I don't have stainless wire in my MiG, but I thought I'd have a lash with it anyway - as I've never tried welding anything stainless before.

I've not welded for months, & I'm self-taught and not many torch hours.... so frankly my welds looked ropey as hell - pretty horrible to look at, but solid.

It was a nice change to play with the dinky Rollers, the metal shears/guillotine, the 6x4 saw & the mig welder. Need to cut some threads on some long & shouldered M6 bolts I've ket from something tomorrow am (I've cut the bolt heads off ready, as I need longer threads now from the heater baseplate to mount it).

(No pics, as the welding is too fugly!)

I feel the same some days with my tig welds.

Sat on my butt and changed the on off switch & emergency stop button on an old lathe . Funny how the Men's Shed " experts " reckoned six weeks ago that it was the capacitor on the motor Even after I showed them that holding the ON button in caused the motor to turn as all speeds
Several so called saved from dead equipment switches were furnished & used by the "experts " , not one worked . Still , "All's well that ends well " , the lathe is now up & running . so is the super duper double cyclone dust & shavings extraction rig I set up . It needs tidying up but it works in principle .. all I need to do is educate guys to use the blinking thing when they use the machines it is designed for .

Oh Ardy , I really feel for you when the Norberts turn up at your sheds in multiples of three or more .

Most electricians have no clue how a motor or the associated control gear actually operates so i'm not surprised.

Guy I've been working for lately has a few old Wadkin, Startrite stuff & the like for wood bothering. He has the space so he's hoarded stuff - several of which I don't think he's ever used.

2 or 3 items he did want to use / has used and all they had on them was a 32A 3 phase plug - so plug them in and off they went . No NVR start/stop, no E-Stops, nothing. Potentially lethal, (& these things aren't "safe" by modern standards (no brake etc) anyway).

I found he had a proper NVR switch (2 actually) on the shelf in the workshop that no-one knew how to connect/test.

It took me a while to puzzle out how one needed to be wired in order to work, but I got there. I mounted it on a board with tails & a 3ph plug IN & a 3ph socket OUT (so that any machine he decided to muck about with could have a proper start/stop NVR mounted & connected).

There are electricians and there are electricians….a lot of it depends on what they work in day in day out. An example I had an issue with my old lathe, had me beat Im not the best with ziggies, as its 30 years since I did my own. A young maintenance spark from a big local factory, tried and gave up as there was no instruction book. An old guy who worked for me offshore took less than 15 minutes to diagnose and repair.

After 3hrs of building I turned a bunch of bits into a 2 stage rubber shock absorber for lead rope solo climbing.

Not satisfied with the one original catch on his pasting table, a friend had to have another on t'other side.

It's a pretty good match to the original, if I do say so myself, apart from the rust...

Today I started to make some space in one of my cutter storage units. I re-organised some drills and cutters into the storage unit featured a few pages back. Firstly all new drills in order:



Then Carbide drills, a couple of which I can see need attention where I have brutalised them getting me out of bother:

The middle row of boxed drills are all parabolic and it is a pity I didn't get more when I had the opportunity, oh well, you can't always buy everything:



All the cutters in the small drawer are all small carbide for the little CNC Mill, I did all right with these as I bought/Buy them at the right money. Some six flute cutters there that I paid a fiver each for!

Interesting, I have always wondered why sewn screamers exist when rubber or steel springs seem like an obvious multi use shock absorber.

Are you going to test how well it works before proper use?

What are the rubbers from and strength?
Is the backup rope dynamic?

Plugging away on my budget camper conversion over the BH weekend.
(I'm really over it now - I'll be glad when it's finished - or sort of finished).

The diesel heater is now mounted under the sofa (I'd already made a 2" tunnel extension section to raise the heater body up off the floor pan to clear the floor insulation, ply & floor covering). I also wanted the fuel dosing pump inside not under the van in the elements, so it's mounted on an old static AC/DC panel charger baseplate with AVM's to a ply plate, which has further AVM's to mount the pump itself on (if not well isolated the dosing pump will transmit a solid "thunk" noise through the van in use). It's all wired up & ready,but I've not got the rear bulkhead in where its Kero Tank will be fitted yet, so not run up properly.

Finally took the plunge and made my folding worktop (it's made out of an old Rubber Wood Kitchen Table that I picked up s/h with all the varnish removed and treated with Danish Oil). The left (hob) side just lifts up, but I wanted to come up with a method for the sink drainer side that cleared the extending mixer tap without needing holes or cut-outs, and could be utilised as extra surface space.
Due to my rather iffy abilities and experience it'll win no prizes for sure, but it works OK.

A few more bits done that just ate time for not much visible progress....

What are the rubbers from and strength?
Is the backup rope dynamic?

I've done a few bounce tests in a tree to tune the stages how I want them. The rubber is rated to 2x it's length (can get away with 2.5x if needed) and they're called "the perfect bungee".

The loop of 9mm red rope is static climbing rope that acts as the rubber limiter to stop overstretch and is rated so won't fail (if it does then I've fallen hard enough to break my spine lol.) some prefer to use a climbing sling as more compact but there's no give in it when this static rope has a little due to knots tightening etc.

Some use nothing just rope tied to a bolt/tree/rock some use single use screamers but there's a growing number who use this bungee setup as reusable, less painful and costs under £100 vs £20 a pop for the sewn screamer.

A little fuel tank, the original was baffled which had broken of inside the tank, then leaked, the band saw has been great, I'm still making plenty of scrap getting used to the box and pan vs a brake press, I've been too spoilt
