Latest steps in the helical steering pinion making saga. Measuring and thus calculating the lead is proving difficult, on the 4th iteration tonight. The best one so far gives the 90 degree pinion at somewhere like 88 degrees. But, I'm getting quicker at tthe whole process.
What's helped is making my own mandrel so I'm not machining whole bars of ali down each time.
The hand reground cutter is looking spot on to be fair, albeit just on aluminium.

I bought another back boring bar, to modify for deeper cutting. I didn't pay attention when i bought it and found i don't have inserts for it and can't even find what the right inserts are.



Luckily with the insert holder being a pin type it's removeable.



So i made a new one to suit DCMT/DCGT 11s. Started by turning a piece of EN19 to have the right 55° angles, straight centre section and tail.



One side was then milled flat to sit against the bottom of the insert pocket.



The seat for the insert was then milled flat. The tail stayed round, no need to give it a flat top like the original.



Test fitted.



Drilled and tapped to M4 x 0.7, indent filed in the tail for the retaining screw that holds this into the bar.



Finished for now. The bar will be modified later to increase the "overhang" for more depth of cut.



And then i made a sandwich as a reward for myself.

They're too small, and DCMT 11s were too big. The manufacturer data says it takes 55° inserts, and it's a pin type so it'd be DN**? But it also says 10mm cutting edge length, and the pin is short. I couldn't find anything like a DNMG 1002 though?

No. For simple cementation there are simpler methods. This is for experiments on color case hardening.

I discovered that buying bone char in large pieces in Europe is more likely a no than a yes. I don't pray for a natural product, all I need is tricalcium phosphate granules. However, as a fertilizer, I also cannot find it, only mixed with calcium sulfates. Burning coal takes quite a long time and a source of clean bones in large quantities will also need to be found. I’ll try to make pellets from powdered bone meal (it’s available and will require firing) or completely synthesize tricalcium phosphate powder and granulate it.

Ive never bought any but is this the stuff your after? Says they can ship internationally up to 2KG but you need to contact them first.

As far as i know all D-type (DN**/DC**) inserts are 55° and the DCMT 11s fit the pocket angle.

This is probably only going to be used in aluminium so won't see too much strain. I have other back boring bars as well.

This is one of the things i'll use it for making; a cutting oil brush pot. It's one-piece with a magnet set in the bottom. The inner bore is larger than the opening and the top lip is angled to try keep excess oil wiped off the brush inside.



Another project. A mate wanted a key ring so i made him a set of Deez Nuts as it's a running joke.
