Just done it again at much faster speeds and lower power, also did it as a negative image, which it should be due to the etching being the light colour and it came out pretty good even though it was on a knarly part of the slate..

Not at all but I can tell you I hate slate,

There is a big difference between the slate that came off my roof and the extra practice bits the guy gave me.

Did this at the same power and speed settings as the one of my bike and it burnt in more and cracked it a bit.

So I upped the speed but kept power the same and got this. (pic is not great as light is bad)

Interesting how the etch on this is coming out white where the slate off my roof came out black.

Now maybe @roofman will be able to tell me what type of slate is on my roof and what the other stuff is. I can tell you my house was built in 1965 so not going to be Scottish slate, I am guessing Spanish but that is just a pure guess.

Your as bad as punters who want a price over the phone without seeing the roof...1965 more than likely Welsh, have they got a green colour to them as that far north as you are they could be Westmorland slate also.

Nope, kind of purple, I will see if I can get a decent image.

This is about the best I can get but you can see the difference between the slate from my roof and whatever the slater gave me below it.

I had a load of bother getting matching slate when we did our extension ( many moons ago now ) i was told it was welsh green /grey , salvaged 90% from the original roof and managed to source more locally but they had been re sized so the original salvaged ones went on the front and rear elevations and we changed the gauge for the hip end to use the others and it was a good colour match , and the yard I bought them from bought all the originals I had left over as they were 18" x 9"s and despite being nearly 80 yrs old still tip top at 1/4" thick .
Apparently a good slate man can tell by the colour variation ( welsh slate ) where about's they were originally quarried .

Had a look at the Delabole slate pit in Cornwall recently. Whacking great hole in the ground that was producing 120 tons of quality slate a day using 1100 men in the 1840s, now a crew of five are still producing 120 ton a day, but the day I went a single chap was driving a digger and dump truck moving spoil from one side to the other.

Many Cornish grade 1 & 2 rebuilds HAVE to use Delabole slate as a planning condition.

Did a power/speed test on the slate from my roof and it gave interesting results. I saw I should be able to get decent results from a high feed with a lowish power setting but just a white etch rather than black.

Loaded up the image of my bike and set the speed to 240mm/s and power to 30% and ran it. Instead of the 1.5hrs it took just 16min this time and I could have reduced that to 9mins if I had also set the border and text to the same settings.

Here is the result on left, I have also put the previous one on the right for comparison.

It is 335mm x 230mm or if you prefer with a dog for scale. Took about 1.5hrs which is not too bad for one of that size.

If you've got the skills and some time to set things up picture wise, then let it run whilst your working ?

Be a nice set of up to 8 baize backed table mats plus two or three slightly larger mats for hot things on the table . ETYS eat your heart out as people find their wallets & purses .
