Got a nice rount tuit this evening:


My wire EDM hasn't materialised yet so I did it the old fashioned way, with square drill bits.

I've had a disc stuck on my 9" grinder for about two years, I very rarely use it but when I do it's cutting concrete, with water to keep the dust down, so no wonder it seized. Bent the original spanner, couldn't get a good hold with mole grips and a punch and hammer was too awkward do while holding the spindle lock.


Spun it off in seconds.

There's tight and then there's properly tight.
When the disc in the vice breaks into pieces i've had to cut the nut off with a 4 1/2" grinder

I did not let a heavy shower stop me. Waterproofing has been considered! I did add a weighted tarp after... It was starting to glow and just as I was about to add metal in the pot.

I did intend to add another two peices 500g worth, but for some unexplained reason the house RCD tripped, but then was fine after resetting Landlord was not happy, even though it was only off 20 seconds.

Fell out the tube nicely, quite happy with the result. Plan to turn this first, and might cross section to get an idea of porosity.

When you've perfected casting brass I'll have a commission for you. Hopefully I'll be able to supply a suitable mould...

Did you do these individually? How did make sure the ends aren't flat?

Or did you roll over length then cut down

I was intending to try brass tomorow. I want to see what this can do incase it fails, I'll know what needs to be redesigned. Power is no problem, unsure about the element life and how well it is retained.

Turned the cast bar, swiss cheese! No worse than my attempts years ago, but I have some ideas for next time. I drilled 12mm and found a hollow to one side. In centre.

Had a peek under microscope, really needed a better polish, I gave a quick sand p800 and p1200.

Finished correcting insert pocket and tapped for screw. Next to grind the clearances.

What are you intending using, plumbing fittings?

I have maybe 10kg of clean with my name on it, to collect sometime. Basically brand new nuts and olives and lots of them. Surplus as the company changed the valves on a job but reused the old nuts and olives!

My plan is to mirror a photo (the pub) then 3D print it with height/contours, spray mould release on it then do a plaster cast...or something like that!

Thinking some more...do I even need to mirror the photo? Don't think I do...I can just pour plaster on the print. Basically I want to recreate this in brass (as opposed to the PLA here), maybe twice the size later too if it works:

Finished a pallet of sheetmetal for a customer who is making some huge sheep feeders. 2mm sheets, there's a decent chunk of weight there!

What are you intending using, plumbing fittings?

I have about 5kg of old taps and fittings, old gas regulator and about 1kg of swarf. The taps were chromed which may be a problem, would I be left with a chrome /nickel shell to fish out, or would it disolve into the melt?

I doubt I can achive that level of detail but would be interesting to try. The picture would suit electro growing if you start with a negative 3d print?
