I've never tried it, but how difficult is it to drill & tap a hole that's been welded up? Is the weld harder than the parent metal?

Usually no problem unless it is cast iron and then that can be a real nightmare. Once welded up some stripped threaded holes in a bandsaws cast iron lead nut, luckily I had serial taps and managed to get it re-threaded but it was hard going.

Got the last of the current batch of chutes and stripper boxes welded up this afternoon only for someone else to say they wanted one
Still have the tubing parts to cut and weld in place but that can wait for another day.

Should be easy enough - as long as you don't use hardox or stainless rods. [Don't ask ]

I used the TIG on these and the weld was no harder than the surrounding metal.
I’ve done the same with MIG and found those welds to be much harder to drill and tap.

I haven't come anywhere near to success with TIG [for a variety of reasons], so it would have to be MIG if the occasion arose.

Today I finished the weather vane I'd been making for my pal [see previous posts]. Now just to get it packed up [dismantled, of course ] and couriered down to him - I hope he likes it.....

I hate this lamp and was quite pleased when the Great Dane failed to put on the brakes and trashed it. Base was completely buckled and an expensive lamp was assigned to the next tip run. Mrs RDR was going to buy exact same replacement which put me in a dilemma - fork out more cash for the same lamp that I hate again or do i do something. So whipped up this base, its totally different from the original. 8mm plate with machined and welded fitting for the lamp to screw into and then machined some bar to weld onto the 8mm base that 22mm copper pipe legs will slot into. Then made some delrin feet. Mrs RDR happy, me not so but i still have £300 in my pocket!

Today I finished a project that's been going on for a few weekends now. Sorry, but it's a wood project.

I seem to spend a lot of time trying to squeeze a little bit more storage space into my workshop. I've got to the point that buying any drawer units is a bad idea as they won't use up every last bit of space and there's always a gap somewhere, so the last few units have been made to measure to fill a gap as completely as possible.

I've general stuck with metal storage units as they're a lot more robust than wooden ones and can hold more weight, but that's ended up with the daft situation that I had (until today) a drawer made out of steel holding disposable gloves! I therefore decided it was probably a good idea to make a storage unit out of wood to hold some of the lighter things. I also had a lot of 18 mm plywood left over from making my workbench recently and some 9 mm plywood left over from a long, long time ago. The result of that (and the fact I bought some heavy duty drawer runners) is that the chest of drawers I made can probably take as much weight as most of the steel ones

Here it is:

The plan is to add some "false fronts" (if that's what they're called) made out of some proper wood once I get hold of some wood (mostly for the practice of working with that strange celluloid material, but also to keep swarf out of the drawers). The shiny-ish stuff you can see in the slots on the right is UHMW tape to make some metal drawer things run smoothly - I've got some old microfilm drawers that were chucked out from my previous work and had been living in a really rickety aluminium-angle-and-rivets frame that I made long before I had a welder.

It lives at the end of the garage under the bench and next to the lathe. I've added some drawer handles and some rubber drawer liners to tide me over until I make the drawer fronts:

I was trying to maximise use of the space between the scaffold pole that holds the bench up and the lathe. I think I managed to use the space well - I didn't think that drawer was going to open when I first looked at it:

Spot the burn marks on the drawer sides - I think I stopped pushing the saw and let it rub for too long. Oh well, live and learn.

Lots of lovely new storage. Problem is: I've filled all the drawers already

Not really made more modified, i often use flap wheels and the guard gets in the way so i used a inox disc to slice about 8mm of the guard away, it worked well i can now grind with the disc flat to the surface, probably not 100% safe but safer the no guard.

depends what steel it is and how quick it cools ive filled a few holes and it wouldn't drill

So yesterday I was little bit destroyed to upload tell etc so
I had to be present in a jobsite till 10 PM on Friday because the woodworkers messed up my work which I had to redone it from zero , customer pretended me to be there istantanuosly ,leave another job etc ect , I've completed what I was doing first (just nothing I was painting a fridge with my neighbor nothing too important but customer can't say me to leave another job for him) .
This customer has a very bad vicious ....
When you talk with him he has to be superior than you because he frequented university etc.
When he doesn't agree with you he starts to be rigid and he expand his chest like a chicken .
His father in-law says had worked everywhere in the world ,to be able to weld with big aircos welders ,to have made lots of wooden fornitures for hotels and another bunch of lies because he can't even use broom and dustpan .
But they have to be smarter than you in everything probably to compensate something they missed in their childhood
The other big defect they have is that they are slow an reluctant with payments
Since I am a perfect "nobody" just a normal person which wants to be respected those episodes made me enough angry to bring my 32mm spanner with me to work ....

Yesterday I went to the jobsite at 8AM
Redone the job from zero
At some point while working when there were other workers the customers and their families , somebody asked me why an elechicken (electrician in AVE terms) should have a 32mm spanner in the toolbox ...
My answer
-this is the lawyer who resolves all the cases-

The customer ,his father in-law and the others workers changed colour they was all white in face , they understood what was the significance of my words ...
Essentially "you gonna lose your teeth and probably become disable if you don't respect me "
After completing the job without saying nothing the customer gave me the money to be honest more than what I've asked

A good decent size spanner makes the difference sometimes
