Today I made my hilti drill work again
I've had this drill a long time and it's given good service.
A while ago it stopped working so a just got around to seeing why.
Took it apart and the bearing in the motor at the brushes end had completely disinterested, no ball bearings at all.
Hilti certainly didn't want anyone to change the bearings and I had to grind the welds off to get the top plate off.
The inner race was seized solid so to remove it I welded a washer and got it levered off while it was still red hot.
The outer race was as bad and I welded some 6mm thread bar to it and hammered it out
I couldn't fin a way of replacing the front bearing but as it felt OK I left it.
Putting it back together was easier, apart for getting all the missing ball bearings out, I found 3 but one was stuck inside the motor but eventually it freed up.
It might become a problem done the line but it was scrap anyway.
Welded the motor top plate on and put the drill together.
And the biggest surprise is, it all works.
I'm not holding out much hope it will last but fine for now.

I did wonder if Ferric Chloride would etch brass or Copper. Would be nice to 3D etch and then get things chromed. Any ideas?

It sure will do copper, it's what you use for PCBs and they're copper traces. Brass it should do as well but being a mixture of metals I'm not sure how each would react in terms of time needed to cut. Worth a try though - watch for the fumes.

It's used for PCB manufacture as standard, so copper's definitely okay. I've also used it with Aluminium Bronze and with Brass with good results.

Managed to find a photo - Google Photo search is very clever...
Back in 2016, a friend of my OH's (called Hayley) who lived in Finland was lined up to run a half marathon in her home country (South Africa) and had been doing a lot of training. For various reasons, Hayley couldn't travel and was going to miss the half marathon but she decided to run the race in Finland on her own at the same time as the half-marathon was going on in South Africa.
I made her a medal out of some aluminium bronze so she could be given something when she finished the race. This was my first ever attempt at etching, so while it's not perfect, I was quite pleased with the result.
