Got yesterdays brackets welded on -

And got the brackets machined for the opposite end -

Just need the threaded rod to finish the links to connect the bits now, but it's looking like Hermes have lost it, as it's status hasn't changed since Wednesday

Well.
It is back to the drawing board.
The Vapour tank did not work as well as I expected this time.

No change apart from I used a different type of "Meths."



The top one, the dirt and grime is clear to see. But soft.
Ok, we leave longer or use an external heat source?

The bottom one.
Didn't make a dent on the grime and crud.

Still there and stiff hard.

So we try again with the same brand of "Meths."

A shame.

Me and my new workmate have prepared the ground for a surface drain,there’s been a pool under this doorway for 30+ years,so I’ve dug up the block paving I laid( ) 12 years back so will lay 14 m of soil pipe down,then drill a hole in the ha ha and out into the meadow,oops see the kink in the trench.

Finished this just before the nonsense started so quite timely. Wanted to be able to work in the workshops and keep warm and the fan heater was costing a fortune. Got a couple of old Eber D1's last year and eventually got round to refurbing them. Was short a few parts so picked another spares and repairs up locally for £50.

Wanted it to be a self contained portable heater unit so built a cage out of box section with a bottom section to mount the burner and power supply with the electrics and fuel tank above.

Finally mounted the thermostat and a isolation switch as well.


The bottom half is caged to allow air circulation in case it gets a boit warm and the top half is semi boxed. Adjustable vent comes out the front and exhaust runs out the back.



Wheels and handle fitted so it can be rolled around the workshop or carried from one workshop to the other.

The bigger challenge was the power supply. The Eber's are 24v which is a bit of a pain but they are cheaper than 12v. To test and setup I had coupled a couple of 12v car batteries in parallel but that didn't work for a portable device. I tried a 20A 24v Chinese power supply off e-bay but the first one arrived damaged and the second one wasn't powerful enough as although rated at 20A the Eber draws about 23 on initial startup. 30A supplies are about £60 and I didn't fancy taking another chance on them so one of the chaps on here pointed me to the RC car world where they couple together 2 computer server supplies to maker a high amperage 24v supply for charging batteries.

Basically you use a couple of used switchable power supplies from rack mounted servers, lift the earth in one of them and connect in parallel to give you 24v at whatever their stated amperage is. Bit of a mission as you have to solder a jumper to fool the supplies into thinking they are connected into a rack so that they will switch on. Anyway after 3 attempts got it right in the end and it works a treat . Eventually went with some HP 460's that only cost £6 each so a really cheap power supply. Still need to get some large shrink wrap to hold them together so in the pics below they are temporarily mounted.



Have cut a small hole in the shed door for the exhaust to go out so now all I do is plug in the power lead, switch on and away it goes. Was working in the shed yesterday and nice and toastie

I agree, the wheelbarrow should be the back end since it has a much greater surface area.

The angle of the photo doesn't help but theres a decent amount more surface area on the builder end, hi tech testing with the compressor confirmed it points the right way.

It probably needs painting at some point, but I think I'll leave that until the weather gets a lot warmer. It also needs a bit of sheet material on the top so I can store stuff on top of it, but I couldn't be bothered to cut that out today, so that's a job for tomorrow. I'll probably attach it with some screws rather than welding it on, so I don't have to worry about gas for that job!

I added a bit of 1 mm thick sheet to the top (held in place with cap screws for simplicity) and then put the anti-slip matting (that was on top of the Halfords unit that the unit is sitting on) onto the top with some double-sided tape to hold it in place.

I've already managed to fill all but one of the drawers!

Nope.

It is a device to help me because my knees are knackered and also my finger joints are getting worse so can't lift/grip things as before.

Makes it much easier to get the cylinders into the back of the car as I have a handle to grip rather than just trying to hold onto the rounded base of the cylinder.

do you not have a wee bottle to transfer it into for wee jobs , how about a diving air bottle or the small argon one
i knew a lad that used to do it

do you remember the dome bottomed oxy bottles tthey were a,nightmare for a 16 year old lad just out school trying to change over,

These aren't that big, they are just the 30l 300 bar one so nearly as much Argon as the standard size but probably only 2/3 the height.
It is mainly when I go to collect them that I made this for but don't have a smaller cylinder anyway and not sure I fancy messing about decanting from 300bar..

Mhhhh, not convinced by that. I'm sure they have better things to do with their time/duties than shoot magpies - maybe @Migmac could throw some light on the subject? Where my brother is just outside Edinburgh there are plenty about.
