Carbon fibre barrels, didn't know they existed, how do they compare with use? I mean do they wear internally?

They are a stainless steel rifled lightweight tube inside a Carbon Fibre structure and a stainless end bushing to put the whole thing under tension. I spent a not inconsiderable amount of time working this out and they are very accurate and very light so especially handy for the Practical lads because of the whole weight issue. I usually marry them to a polymer upper.

These guys allegedly make the best Carbon barrels: https://christensenarms.com/products/ but by the time I have a barrel blank in my hands it is £700 at least plus three months to get it here. I decided to make my own.

Finished turned the wheels. They only just fit in the small lathe,so resorted to using a 40mm boring bar upside down and running the spindle in reverse to finish machine the outside diameter. View attachment 218440View attachment 218441View attachment 218442

Harrison/Colchester/ Fong Kong special

Made me smile. I remember the late, great, John Stephenson having a debate with someone who insisted that only a Colchester was good enough because they were "British made". Wasn't too happy when John pointed out they were now half steel half rice.

I have a 300 and I am now agonising over a 350. I need to go stand in a corner and face the wall for a while. I did notice the carriage wheel was on the right of the saddle in the American favored position rather than on the left. Although all the hot chips land on your hand I am much faster with the traditional layout of carriage left hand cross slide with my right.

So, back chambering barrels again today. Thought I would show you how I set up to cut the barrel tenon and chamber. Please understand, the pictures are set up for this post and the coolant is turned off.
So, barrel centered and tenon cut and threaded:



So, screwing the Barrel Extension on, a great deal of any machining process is all about jigs fittings and tooling. This is a barrel extension wrench I have made just for this task, it clamps tight around the extension and has a square 1/2" hole for a ratchet:



This is a bit of tooling that is made and marketed by a guy in the US and is essentially a micrometer depth guage for a chambering reamer:



The chamber depth is critical, I usually manage to get within 0.001 :



PLENTY and I mean plenty of cutting oil is fed through the barrel under pressure, but it looks like my fitting is going to need replacing, started to leak now:-(

We've been spending more time outside with this nice weather, the table we had was a bit rotten and there were two pallets in a skip in the front garden, rude not to!
