Knowing what I receive from fitted door manufacturers I would vote for the latter...
In the same category as dropping a door on its corner, throwing some soft wax in and hoping we don't notice,
Or overtrimming vinyl and throwing some soft wax in and hoping we don't notice,
etc
etc

Was waiting to see the hinges put on the wrong sides of the doors by the manufacturer so they bind on the ceiling, but at least they did not do that to you

Been struggling to get there doors aligned for the last 3 weeks
I know the units a level in all 3 planes.
Got the roofing square out the other day to find a 600mm w door 3mm out across the top.
At least I know I'm not going mad.

One of the air cylinders on the Chiron had started to leak, basically it meant the compressor was constantly on which is not good. I removed the cylinder a few days ago to get the seal out and it was absolutely knackered. I called a local pneumatics place and they said they should be able to get me a repair kit and they would email once they had a price. It was nearly 4pm the next day before they got back saying they had been struggling to match up the part number but eventually they had found it was made under licence for Chiron so they could not supply. I contacted Chiron who passed me on to their UK partner who, after asking the machines serial number, came back with a quote. The quote was for a complete cylinder and it came in at nearly £1300 of which £40 plus VAT was for packaging and £43 plus VAT was for postage

I said I was only needing a seal and asked if it was available but so far no reply. Today I decided to refit the cylinder but just blank off the air pipe to the side that was leaking. There are two cylinders and also springs that lift the tool basket up so I wondered if the springs and one cylinder would be enough, at least until I get something sorted such as possibly adapting a cheaper cylinder. Well I am happy to report it works fine, very slightly slower but as I am not in a hurry an extra 1/10th of a second every tool change will not bother me

As that was done and dusted I thought I better try and do some catch up with work.
Plasma cut some 6mm Alu and welded up a couple of monitor stands for a fishing boat, alu had been out the back for a while so was a bit manky, I need to see if I can find something like the machine that @henry Kadzielski has just got for cleaning up plate
.

I then had two hauler knives to fill.
The first one is steel and was worn both sides. I tigged up the first side and ground it down.

Tig however was slow for such a lot of filling so the second side I got out the stick welder and filled it up.

Ground down and knife is ready to be refitted.

Next up was a stainless knife cover I make for the bronze knife on a different make of hauler, it is much cheaper and easier to fill the wear on the stainless than it is to fill up the bronze.

Just tigged this one then ground smooth.

Headed home and just got in the house when the rain started pouring down and thunder and lightning, the dog is presently hiding

might be talking rubbish, but is there no way to modify the cylinder to take a more "standard" seal. sleave it or some form of adapter?

It actually looks like the pics I have seen of other Norgren seals and I have a sneaking suspicion it will just be a standard seal. I will take some dimensions and ask the local place if they can match it up with anything, if not I can probably do something like you said. I certainly won't be paying £1300

aye, I figured that at 1300 for a seal.....

unlikely it's a custom made seal though, seals and bearings etc most designers rely on the standards and adapt to suit, unless they really have no other choice or it's a prototype etc. but for a pneumatic cylinder I doubt if it's anything exotic... might be best to remove it and take it with you to them.

It is a bit different to cylinders I have seen. It has a shock absorber on the end (right in pic) but the rod itself only hits the shock absorber when it is almost fully up.
The seal itself which is the rod end is just a push fit in but it has a moulded ring on its outer circumference which locks into a groove in the cylinder body, the more pressure the more it will grip.

I don't have a pic of the seal itself but it looks just like the one in the pic below.

A quiet and slow day today.
After Round 1 of surgery to put my face back together after a serious abscess, I was not up to doing much.

Last night I dismantled the breast drill and let it sit in a de-rusting tank. I also set up another tank to de-rsut some odd bits and balance the 2 x 3amp out puts from my PSU.




The hardest bit was removing the quill from the gear, something I should of looked at. But I didn't and it bit me back later.



De-rust tanks. As Normal I make them up as I need them.



Black enamel, I have not made my mind up if it is any good. I may have to wait until it has fully cured and is in use to see if it is any good.
The painted parts came out with all the paint, grease and rust removed and a few minutes with course wire wool had them to a point the paint could be applied. In todays heat, that did not take long.

The chuck re-built. This one had some good springs in the chuck. So now I will be able to find some suitable steel and make some of my own, for the other chucks I have which are in need.



Reassembled.
Wooden handles cleaned with "meth's" and then given a good wax. In the heat the wax as being pulled in fast. I ended up with a Satin finish on the wood. It ties in nicely with the main gear wheel.

I did not repaint the main gear wheel. It was in good condition, the age was something I wanted to keep, along with the remains of the manufactures details.

Hindsight to the above job.

I should of made sure the parts went together easily before paint.
The quill had a bulge on it, so slipping the gear wheel onto it was pain.

So it had to be dressed down in a lathe to remove it.

Last few jobs.

Today was a day with out many power tools.
Main reason when I started, it would of been antisocial to my neighbours.
Plus the ear defenders and mask were uncomfortable on my head.

The Rawhide Mallet.



Still not sure about the head. But shaft was cleaned back. Using a Of the shelf wax remover and wire wool. Then stained with wax stained with coffee.
The head was treated a bit of leather restore compound. It closed the cracks up and gave it a better feel to it. But I will look further into it.

Cobblers Tack Hammer.



Head cleaned with wire wool and emery cloth. The head had some movement on it. So I pulled the metal wedge out. Reshaped the shaft and refitted it.

I am tempted to get myself a Hot animal double pot glue system.
The shaft was cleaned and waxed with clear bee's wax. But instead of the wood remaining a light colour it stained up to this hue.
The head is magnetic but it lost some of the strength when it got a bit warm when dressing the peins.
So it is sat on the shop anti theft magnet device.


Cobblers pliers.



Boiled in Citric acid, dried and washed in water.

Warmed up and a mix of linseed oil and wax applied, then buffed.
This way we kept the look of the age and gave them a protective finish.

Had to heat the rivet up and reform it a bit as rust had loosened it and deformed it.

Nice tight fit on all the heads.
So a clean up of the metal. That is when the safety gear reminded my of the stiches.
Primed, painted.
I could not save the warning label, so it was removed and the shafts cleaned with shellac flakes and white spirit mix.

Moved the outside tap and made a quick stand from a badly twisted sleeper we had leftover.

When I acquire enough wood I'll build a bigger bench with the two slate capstones either side of the sink (Propped up behind it in the pic). Need to plumb in the waste now, probably machine some fittings and do it with flexy hose as it's not permanent.

Motor mount for the rotary table.

Learnt a lot making this one.

Proof is in the pudding.

Awaiting fixings to finish but just about done.
Will mill the motor end square to match too.
Cap heads nearest the table lock the assembly onto the non turning shaft. Didn't fancy relying on the two tiny grub screws that normally secure it.

First saw him on Discovery, and to be honest, when he starts making things from sleepers, I assume the worst . But when he’s finished, some of his creations really are outstanding .
