The rare occasion it gets used will most likely be for fine pitch electronics repairs or things of that ilk. I don't really have a need for it but it was too nice to go in a skip.

Yes, i have noticed i struggle to read verniers or micrometers these days. I might invest in a few digital tools.

I bought a digital height gauge a few years back. Not only can I see the measurement the pleasure of just zeroing off instead of counting up from odd numbers is a pleasure

A perspex end plate for a roots pump. A student wants to see the inside the pump while it operates. I was going to cut the groove for the rubber seal on a rotary table, but another staff member said he would do it in the cnc machining centre.

Got this turn of the century Quarry Mans hammer head today.
The Shaft I brought. Quicker and simpler than making one.

The head had been badly sharpened with a grinder by a blind man. Plus time had made it soft.

The peins were we shaped and as it owes me little I tried a new idea.
Back in the day it was costly to have the head re-worked in the quarry workshops. In lost production and the high cost the quarry owners would charge for the workshop time.

So they used place the head in a charcoal and ash fire and cook it.




So it was quenched in cold water, cleaned up and fitted to the shaft.
That was a time consuming job, as the hole was not square and out of line.



Shaft was stained and waxed. I like the dark lines what the wax as picked out in the grain of the wood.

Head was double wedged and glued.

Could you elaborate a bit on the process? I take it the ash and charcoal was a source of carbon to harden the steel?

Take some charcoal, mix it with partly brunt wood and ash from a wood fire.

I used wood and old meths to start it. When the fire as got the heart going nicely, add the metal.

Pile the mix all round the emtal and let it cook until the metal is a dull red. Quench in cold water.

Today I made a start on filling in the gaps between the storage containers and the floor between the workshop containers.

Not much to show for half a days work.

I believe bone charcoal, especially horse bone is good to add to the mix too.

I understand that, but I didn't have any.

In the wars in France, the "Bollack Dagger" was sometimes done that way. It make the tip hard to help with it's designed use.

It was a handy little "tool" the English archers used on down French knights.

The whole colour case hardening thing was something i was interested in a while ago, me being into old guns. The best man in the world at this trade is Ray st.ledger in Birmingham.

I found out later that the fire was made up of ash and partially burnt wood, think of the remains you get from a fire what has brunt out, leaving remains. The ash was went to act as a insulator to try and keep the heat in.

If charcoal could be obtained it was used. But that was a costly alternative.

Not made today, but it has been a very busy week for personal stuff, so thought I’d post it now. It’s a copy of a rig from ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’. The customer will age it himself, and is getting a buckle specially made.

It was great fun making it, and I have a couple of other characters rigs from that game to make by next week.

By coincidence this video popped up in my subscriptions list today. I know a lot of hardeners use a barrel of water with air bubbling through it for the quench, don't really know why, but there must be a good reason.

Chris here are some photos the dimensions of the shaft are 9" from the back of the u/j to the end that engages in the dog on the crank hope it helps if you need any further info just giz a shout
