Cast iron ? Are you going to weather them or have them stress relieved ? I have being trying scraping recently, oil flaking especially, not easy but not incredibly difficult either.

Got to take my dad and brothers boat out the water on monday but it doesn't have an engine on it. Decided to see if the old (circa 73-79) Volvo Penta 2 smoke that has lived in the folks barn for the best part of 10 years (probably hasn't been started in 20) would fie up to make moving it round to the trailer easier. New spark plug and some fuel in it and it started 4th pull, happy days. Unfortunately it wont turn so we wouldn't be able to steer. Looks like there is a rubber collar in the column that has bonded to the column and engine, we could get it to turn with a large pole but it takes a decent bit of force and springs back nicely.
So, long story short I decided to make a mount for it so we can use it on monday.

Scraping is easy ,correcting geometry and adjusting geometry for sag and droop takes skill
I think a lot of people are doing cosmetic scraping which means nothing or scraping in a cross slide but it’s pointing in the wrong direction.
I’ve said here before doing a apprenticeship as a machine tool fitter was probably my worst ever career mistake and Im still bemused by it almost being trendy and gutted that I sold most of my stuff for peanuts before it became trendy

Yes i have noticed that myself, its like the whole knife making thing, its a trendy lost art resurrected. My trade is fitter and i did ask in the tech why scraping was not taught anymore, i was told there was no need for it anymore. But it is something i would like to know.

Some new sides for a local fella. Soon as he seen these he ordered 2 for the other side started off as a needed repair to a the other side looks terrible now
I made this today, not quite finished but just about. I then have to make a couple of rollers for it so hopefully I can do that on the CNC lathe if I figure out the difference in the codes from the old control to the new one

It is a bow roller, goes on the front of a boat and is used for lifting the anchor to keep it away from the hull.
picture of DXF below showing it with the anchor, personally I would have done some things slightly different but customer emailed me the drawings and asked me to make it.

Scraping is still used on class cnc machines and big plain bearings.
Just not so needed in a country where a population explosion and house building are all that matters

A few weeks ago I got a Hand Picture Frame Cutter.Was in good condition, complete with sharp blades.
Yes, it did work. But it torn the wood, not slice. The blades were sharp. They drew blood.
I asked some one who worked at a picture frame shop to have a look. Turns out that they had been sharpened wrong.
£10 later, both blades re-ground to the correct angle.
The LHS as you look at the image is now set for hard wood. The RHS for soft wood and manmade timber.
My new Picture frame clamps set to work all ready. Nice bit of kit.
So I cleaned this up.

Had my 7050 top delivered yesterday, so started making the stand for it today.
It will look a bit low at the moment bit there's more to add to it yet. It will have to be stored under my fixed workbench down the side of the garage ( you can see the clutter ) so there's going to be castor wheels which will lift it up approx another 125mm so it just goes under, then some wind down feet to pick it up to a working height, hence the tubes welded in the sides.
Before any bright spark tells me I've fastened it on wrong way around, it's only sat there to work on

Today [well, yesterday now] I decided to get the NVR fitted to the Amolco.
Easy...find a scrap offcut, make bracket to fit on with the motor-mounting bolts, form a double bend in it to bring the switch closer to the front of the machine, drill to accept the switch box, then wire the supply through the switch & job jobbed.
First mistake was using a small offcut of stainless, rather to cut a bit off a larger piece of mild and thereby potentially rendering it useless for the next 'project'. Had I just done that, the job would have been done in half the time.....

Anyway pushed on and got it painted to match the motor, mounted, drilled for the switch box & that fitted.
Then I started getting severe [and painful
] attacks of cramp in my hands which can be a result of the drug cocktail. I stopped there, as it's no fun working when I have these, sometimes even letting go of a tool can be...interesting. I know I could have just used three mounting screws for the box, but if I have to head-butt it......

A silly thing, saved from the rubbish bins.
This box, the contents and the box next to it have been dumped, don't start me on that.
The tools are long gone. But I found the box hidden in a local skip.
Sadly, the box was broken. But that was mainly due to worm.
The front was saved and cleaned up, the worm arrested.
Frame made, yes the wood was recycled, from a window frame.
The box front was cleaned and waxed with a hard wax. Bee's wax from a local bee keeper. The frame stained and waxed.
What I did not show was the little metal springs, what lock the wood together. Made from a broken band saw blade. They keep the front in the frame and will allow the different aged woods to move and stay together.

Scheidam is where my Mum and Dad first met in the 1950’s and I have many happy childhood memories of our annual holidays there visiting my grandparents.
I don’t get over to Holland so often these days, but when I do manage a visit it always feels like I’m ‘home’ again. As a child we moved around a lot with my Dad’s work so I never really put down any roots anywhere, but Rotterdam and Schiedam always seemed to be ‘constant’ in my childish mind, so I always felt that it was where I belonged!
Even now (at 58) I feel that’s where my home is!

Fitted the extended ramp and its side wings to the lift, making it a much easier job getting things on and off. It takes a minute to put things in place and a minute to disassemble it for work on the bike. I made it in three pieces to enable easy assembly and manhandling of the structure.
The main part of the ramp is supported at the front by a piece of 7x2" timber on edge, and a piece of 5x2" in the middle. Down the sides are a couple of 2x2s to increase rigidity and also provide a shelf for the side wings to sit on.
The parts are held in place by simple over-reaching straps with inserts (blind bolts) down through the neighbouring part - they can't go anywhere.
Next step is to make some diy deck paint with extra sand.

I would not ever dream of trying to gain-say a time served rebuilder but here's my take on it:
I agree that cosmetic scraping holds no value but if a person removes the rock from a cross-slide by scraping the ways in flat, and then finds that it's pointing in the wrong direction, then it had already worn to be pointing in the wrong direction so they have lost nothing in that respect but gained very much in terms of rigidity and it's a fairly simple matter to re-scrape something like cross-slide alignment into truth following a facing cut. Whenever I'm holding someone's hand in basic scraping instruction I take great pains to point out and demonstrate the areas of typical wear so that they avoid scraping those further. At the end of the day you have to commend the efforts of anyone who is at least willing to give it a bash especially if they are hindered by limited skill and very limited tooling/reference pieces. I got into it because try as I might I could not find anyone to do scraping work for me.
What REALLY gets my heckles up is people (dealers, mostly) who take a flaker to make a way look like it's been scraped in just so they can dupe more money out of an unsuspecting buyer. That's just dishonest IMO.
