Finally got the lathe back up and running but it is not right and I think the controller is on its last legs. Eventually I managed to get everything working and only had a couple of drop outs through the day but I got all the lathe work done that I had been needing to do.

Skimmed a set of hauler plates, have them oiled up now but it is amazing how quick the rust sets in.

Next it was make 4 rollers from 120mm Dia nylon.

Then it was the rod ends for the new style steering joints I am making.

And a pic of all 4, 2 left and 2 right hand threads.

I can't really say there is much to this "make" its just a piece of wire and a magnet.

its to show how wire properties can alter as part of a wire drawing demonstration that I do at the industrial museum where I volunteer.

the wire is 304 stainless steel which is normally referred to as non magnetic in its soft state. As the wire is drawn it is work hardened, and this is hard wire, and the work hardening alters the structure of the wire, an it becomes more and more magnetic the harder it gets.

half of the wire has been annealed, so it is soft again and effectively non magnetic. so I can demonstrate that springy wire is magnetic, but bendy wire isn't.

I dont think you can get something more simple to demonstrate, but I think a few people will be surprised by it and may get them thinking.


if you have 300 series mig wire you may find that it is magnetic due to it being hard rolled to stop it kinking, but 300 series sheet metal is non magnetic

Not today.
But finished today.

A few days ago I acquired a brass fire extinguisher. Complete with wall bracket.
But sadly time had worked her magic on it and it was only held together with paint and rust holding to the extinguisher.

The 2 ends were saved, needed some work with the MIG. But the spine was to far gone.

A modern unit is almost the same size (2kg powder or a 2lt foam.) But not suitable to swop over.

So I "liberated and modern wall mount, introduced it to the angle grinder, welder and disc sander.
Here is the results.

Managed to knock up a quick grinder rack with a spare TV mount that came my way and a couple of bits of flat bar.

Got it in between the lockers I acquired recently, got some shelves fitted into the lockers and got a load of stuff into them. I have now made some strange grayish stuff spring up out of the ground. I'm not sure what it is but a friend thought it could be something called "floor", I'm not so sure, I haven't come across "floor" in a loooong time!!

There is a video knocking about. I'll see if I can find it. although there was a days worth of debuuging the design that I dont remember from the video...

Made a start to the design/plan of conversion of my CNC lathe to a new controller.
It may or may not go ahead, depends on funds, over the Christmas period.

Electrical cabinet layout should be similar to this.

The wiring diagrams so far have been quick to do as they are basically the same as the Chiron FZ12S that I retrofitted a while back, only had to modify a few things such as the safety relay configurations and drive types.

I still have a lot of the I/O to work out.

Been looking out some of the stuff I need, think I have most of it although I may have to get some more breakout boards as I can only find one at the moment. I am sure I have more though.
I have a couple of PLC's so no probs with that, also have plenty of 24v Din rail PSU's, bought a load when they were being sold off cheap.

I use the Automation Direct (Koyo) DL-06 ones, have bought them up off eBay over the years. Have one in the lathe at the moment and also one in the Chiron and have at least one sitting here, probably 2.
