I managed to tweak all the drawers and get them back into position. The bottom drawer which was too wide to fit in the carcass with both runners attached; I just let sit on the bottom of the cabinet and attached a runner to one side. It looks ok and works fine. I might even remove the runner and use it as a box that I can just pile tools for a job into and take to where it's needed.
As for the paintwork I decided that it was trying too hard to look good and failing at the job. I rubbed chalk over it (the kind you use in the gym) and blew off the excess. Instant rat-rod effect. Now it look in keeping with the rest of it. I may even deliberately distress it even more with some fine sand paper.

Waxing is good, but have you seen soap used for wood? Popular in Denmark.

I haven't used soap finish for years, last job was on a Grand Mother clock case.
I used it to take to deep red look of the wood to a lighter shade.
If you do it a few times you can get a aged satin wax look.
Don't let a cat lick it. You get tongue streaks what never buff out.

It's not a nice job, but I can get away with it by telling myself it's meant to look that way! Many lessons learnt along the way and many more to learn with the next project I attempt. Here's a photo for the Wall Of Shame
(I've got a bit of light sanding to do to smooth out some of the gloss that's gone on a bit thick at the edges, because we couldn't have that ruining the look
)

The point is you MADE it, didnt just think about it,plan it, you did make it so dont be so harsh on yourself, it will last years , you can always repaint/polish or refinish anytime you like !

I know the feeling, I dismantled a large fir tree in a confined location using a harness and chainsaw and although it went without a hitch I was never entirely comfortable with doing it. Being 35ft up using a chainsaw with the tree gently swaying certainly concentrates the mind.
It makes me admire even more the guys who do it full time.

Glayva is my poison if choice these days, but it goes down far too easy. Asda are (or were) selling for £12 a bottle.

My favourite dram is Lagavulin, but at the price I don't drink much of it.
Bunnahabhain is about my favourite, its so nice I try not to keep any in the house ;-)

I made a follow rest for my Monarch lathe. I do have an original one but it's designed for use with a lantern tool post so it puts the finger just next to the tee slot, and it's not the most rigid thing ever made. This one is made from 70mmx15mm flat bar and is rock solid. It also lines up properly for use with my quick-change tool holders. The original one had a bolt-on head so I removed it and re-used it on this one I made.
