Stuff you have made today

Just made 12 Rail heads/ finials to extend a gate.
I wasn't able to find anything the same to buy, so bought something close and had to chop bits off and weld bits on.

Chopped the top off and stuck on some 20mm square.
Shaped the top bit of 20mm square bar with a grinder

Welded them to a length of 20mm square bar.
Added another rough ring of weld to shape with a grinder.

It looks a bit bigger because it was closer to the camera.
The flat faces on the originals are a little bit concave but i'm not going to do that.

Originally the doors were edged to look like shaker doors but customer changed there mind. Decorators still haven't painted yet unfortunately so no finished pictures.

Decided it was time to trade in the drawing board.
Too much faff changing designs for customers and getting the designs to them.

Used sketchup once ten years or so ago.
Not too bad for an hours learning.

Today I made the stand for the gas-bottle BBQ I'm doing for my son. Took the chance to have a go with the 4mm rods @richard [cheers, mate ] kindly sent me to try. Actually found them quite easy to 'strike up', although the results don't look good due to lack of 3D vision [& practise ] . When I concentrate on following the join I forget to feed the rod, and when I pay attention to that I lose to the join..... I introduced them to Mr Grinder, and by the time Mr Paintbrush is involved they'll look half decent [I think].





Schoolboy error for the day? The tube will be secured in the base by a through-pin + R clip, and at the top by a spigot under the BBQ with a tapped hole + bolt. All in the cause of dismantling and storing for the Winter. As there's been talk of decking , I drilled & countersunk holes so that it can be screwed down, then I only welded the lower spigot to the wrong side of the triangle. Been sorted now though .

I made a thread dial indicator bracket to fit a Myford DTI to my Drummond M over the weekend.

Trial fit to make sure the tail stock would clear it.

And this is my first use of the DTI a blind internal 5/8" BSF thread and it even fits my lathe's mandrel.

Now I know the thread fits I can finish machining the outside.

Over the last no of days I have been making this there is still a bit to do but I am getting there

After 8 months of dragging it out I thought putting my bike back together was a good idea, (after getting control cables sorted)

A couple of small issues (forgetting where stuff goes ) so lots of 2 steps forward 3 steps backward job but,

Found out that tig wire works really well for templating curves for cutting.

Means now if we get a summer, I'm ready.

Not made. but fixed. Bought an LED batten light off the bay, a lot cheaper that my preferred local electrical factor. It didn't work! bit of thinking, stripped it down into it's component parts, resoldered some joints and it's now working.
