I was just thinking tonight that a tea cosy is going to be handy soon, I can see them becoming popular again with the colder days (and nights) and the wearing of more jumpers becoming the norm.

Who else used to have to clear the snow to then lift the lethal, concrete coal bunker, sliding door (also concrete). Then chip away at the frozen mass of coal. Legging it in the morning from the scratchy blanket covered, bed to find Mum warming your school clothes on a leccy bar fire.

Not sure on source but seems about right, I saw a title about how this might be the first time in modern history a new generation has been worse off or the same as its parents.

Maybe its inevitable all this growth and massive increase will start to tail off as it would have to come from somewhere population growth energy resources etc.

Currently with fuel (i.e. Diesel / petrol) prices 25% up on last year, food prices rocketing, electricity and gas, general inflation which they 'say' is around 9 or 10 %...

Things are tight here too.

Read an interesting thing by some cook / chef on twitter, the real inflationary costs, not around 10%.

Currently with fuel (i.e. Diesel / petrol) prices 25% up on last year, food prices rocketing, electricity and gas, general inflation which they 'say' is around 9 or 10 %...

Things are tight here too.

Read an interesting thing by some cook / chef on twitter, the real inflationary costs, not around 10%.

Indeed some products raise more than others so personal inflation is different for everyone

If you do a lot of commuting or driving for work then you will spend more on fuel which has increased a lot more than average prices so your inflation is higher.

The access to cheap food for sure is a big one that will be driving the increase in foodbanks etc as people simply don't have enough money to buy it. I suppose the diesel to run tractors growing it , lorries transporting it etc all increase it and then your back to energy costs.

Bodgers R Us. Today I had a play with a gas forge I have had for years. A son's friend came out to look at the forge, and I found out a couple of weeks back that the man who made it for me in exchange for a computer over 20 years ago passed away. I had a home made burner on it that wasn't very efficient and didn’t get as hot as it should. It was a “mongo burner” and the pipe was to large and short, leading to fussy behaviour because the gas speed was to low for mixing or low flow.

This inspired me to dig it out and have a go at it. The first was a replacement naturally aspirated burner. The inlet venturi was China’s finest from Aliexpress. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002952443342.html

It uses 1” pipe for the barrel and ¼” for the gas jet holder. I used a 1.2A mig tip for the gas jet. Works pretty well.



Number 2 burner was a blown burner, fabri-cobbled up out of 1” pipe and fittings and a fan as a proof of concept. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004278094349.html The fan is a bit cheezy although it does work. Speed control is vi a light dimmer switch. These has a mig tip drilled out to 1.5mm for the jet.

I will mount up the naturally aspirated burner properly and fix the lining of the forge as it is nice not to have to have power or blower noise.

I will probably put a blown burner on my casting furnace and get some casting sand as I haven’t done any casting for 25 years

Dunno, my jobless lad has just disappeared to Reading for a university housewarming pi$$ up. Hopefully his new contact lenses, paid for by the Bank Of Mum & Dad will help him pull some filly who lives a fair distance away. Thereafter we'll have the "well if you want a car, you'll need as job" discussion if it doesn't give him the impetus to do it on his own.

The reflection of our images of tough childhoods was measured against the standards of the time,so if everyone else had the same conditions it was acceptable and occasionally our parents,probably wartime generations would’ve reminded us of their experiences as a leveller.

Knew a chap made a faux, Georgian, uPVC window in a windowless room. Used trunking as the frame and mirror tiles as the glass. He even had a small cill and curtains. Very effective.
