My first big FUBAR when I was trusted to do a whole job all by myself not far into my apprenticeship.

The shop inspector left that #5 solid centre on the shelf behind his marking out table until the company closed down, 10 years later.....

About 5 years ago I saw some window bars on a storage shed / barn due for demolition , the same bars i needed to make a BBQ, the roof was made of railway sleepers and it was collapsing, all I can say is that I stood INSIDE trying to wrench the bars off and it ended with me reenacting the blitz by tunnelling out from under a pile of rubble.

I'm selling my shipping container so needed a sign, sprayed a piece of steel black, masking taped some lines on and then painted the words, peeled back the masking tape to find it had let paint past, not too bad, it's only a for sale sign. Put it on a shelf to dry, vertically , you guessed it, runs of paint from some of the letters/numbers

Managed to clean it up and it'll do now. The local sign writer doesn't need to worry about any loss of business it's currently drying flat.

I made a shed last spring out of plywood I salvaged from a huge packing crate from China , turns out that it was full of fungus spores which all sprang into life last winter, now I've basically got a mushroom farm made of ply that seems to have been glued together with flour and water, one more winter and it will have dissolved.

But are the mushrooms edible?

Dont worry it wasnt too day but a couple of weeks back i blew up a couple of thousand dollars worth of computer.

The electrician was busy so i had gone too check the generator pcb and sensors as we were getting strange readings all over the place and alarms so anyway after checking the sensors and finding them all good and the terminal strips and connectors on the board i found a plug that was completely unpluged, and of course like a lemmon though that might be the source of my problem and plugged it back into the only avalible terminal port which it had come from by the way with out asking some one why it had been disconnected and with out checking the wiring diagram too see what those wires were connected too.

Small fizt and the magic canned somke was released pcb lights went out and that was the oh bugger moment. Unfortunately because the company dosent see the point although we know whats wrong we cant repair it as we dont keep the resistor or any small electronic circuitry components in stock or a decent soldering iron. The cheif engineer was not happy too put it mildly. The thing i had plugged back in was the turbo air assist system which had been dissconnected because it had a dead short in the circuit doh.

@addjunkie will be able too testify too cheif engineers are usually not amused by such stupidity.

Also nearly got blown up the other week though thats a whole other story and one id best not elaberate on and it was not my mess up either.

After much abuse and bad langauge, in reality, though you displayed youthful enthusiasm to sort something, and didnt dig deep enough. The route cause is poor isolation management. So the blame actually lies with the Chief Engineer for not ensuring the plug was correctly labelled and secured so it couldnt be plugged back in. Also the information available in formal written handovers.

Sadly Old Faithful passed away yesterday , just too soon , I've only had it 15 years and I found it in an abandoned barn covered in s**t. I brought it back from the dead again a few years ago with new bearings but this time I'm afraid there was nothing anyone could do and the magic smoke came out.

RIP.

Interestingly the autopsy shows the gears are all intact and show no signs of wear I can see, can't fault Makita on that one.

Technically, you didn't cock it up...it just had come to the end of it's natural life. In fact, you'd administered intensive care so should award yourself plaudits.

It's the mother's birthday at the weekend, haven't been in a shop for 2 months and aren't about to start now just for a birthday card. Had a scrap of stainless on the scrap pile that was the approx size of a card.

I'll make one I thought flower in the middle and all...

It wouldn't have taken whoever unplugged it a few seconds to stick a couple of cable ties around the plug to prevent re termination.

Tried to do a repair on a hinge from on of them stupid plastic 'garden organisers' cos i can't find anything that will fit as it has a gas ram.

Not had the welder out in months so did my usual checks, have i got gas?, is my wire feeding? etc etc, no problems.

I didn't think the hinge would weld very well anyway because it has heavy galv and is all pressed from 1.5mm steel.

Ground off galv, lined it all up and away i went...

Welds hissing and bubbling as they cooled... WHAT??

Now my welder is parked in the corner of the shed near the door so i can reach my big vice outside with the torch (very small shed no room for vice inside) but, because of the way i had to fit it in the control panel was facing away from me and there is a pile of crap stacked around it so i couldn't get to it easily.

Checked everything again, guage showing gas etc, tried again, same thing!!

After a good half hour of head scratching shifting stuff around i finally realised i must have caught my regulator as i reached for the front panel and turned it off! I was showing pressure one side but because the second guage is usually barely off zero i hadn't realised i was getting no gas at the torch and the hiss of gas at the torch when testing was just a tiny amount of pressure that had built up.

I did today…Ive 5 minutes Ill stick the mower on my new tractor make sure alls well.

Mower now has a big dent in the backside where I reversed it into the pillar of the steel framed building it lives beside. Thatll teach me for not checking if I was in forwards or reverse!

Let's be honest not everything goes to plan , stuff goes boobs in a vertical position, you have an errorgasm, FUBAR, drop a clanger, down the pan, up the wall, A over T and straight as a donkeys hind leg.


Yesterday I decided to put a cable on a brand new Bosch drill I got that was used for a display and thrown away, I decided to do it properly and take out the old cut off cable ends from the trigger module , bad mistake, when I unclipped it there were dozens of tiny loose contacts and springs all over the bench, took me an hour to work out where they went and get the thing back together again. Maybe this will help ...
Slip a darning needle down the side of the wires it will release the sprung contact that fixes the wire core of the cable in place , allowing you to ease out the old wire .

Sometimes you have to take a mm or so off the end of the darning needle if the point is too long and prevents full movement of the spring contact to allow the old old wire to be withdrawn .

Once the old wire is out gently ease the darning needle out , strip the same length off the new wire , twist it up lightly & solder the new wires with as little solder as possible then push the soldered end in the hole the old wire came out of .

Don't forget to put the cable stress relief grommet back on the new cable ( pull out the old wires and carefully slowly drill the old insulation out ) & super glue the cable stress relief grommet in place on the new cable just before you clamp it down .
