Stud Welders

I’m looking at stud welders that will fix a threaded stud onto a workpiece with, a capacitor discharge(?) I think. It’s to put a fixing on the back of the small bits I make with the plasma cutter so I can bolt them through things like signs for example.

looking on eBay there’s capacitance discharge stud welders for around £30 which seems too cheap and they look like they go onto another unit almost like a replacement torch.

anyone got any experience of anything like this please? A cheap one would do for now just to see if it works but ultimately I’d be after a decent one. If anyone follows 42fab on youtube he uses them a lot but never shows the box of tricks, just the torch.

No they are a fair amount of money but at least i know what I'm looking at now.

I wonder if one of the auto body pin welders could be adapted?

His is a Taylor stud welding cd8, definetely not the cheap option though.

I’ve only seen one for less than 400quid.... I bought it, fixed it and sold it on.
One of the caps had blown. Nothing fancy inside just a bunch of caps and a timer really

I used one when I worked in a boat yard, for welding studs to the deck of a big power launch some guy was turning into a top end motor cruiser. Plan was to bolt plywood down, then screw teak decking to that.

The stud welder 'sales man' brought the gear out to us and showed us several examples how it worked, how good it was etc. Problem was we were welding studs to 10mm deck plate, he showed us samples on 2mm steel sheet....

After welding several hundred to the deck in marked places I found they were being snapped off by a simple knock or tap. And we were using their most powerful unit.

Next thing, going round with a stick welder putting a big tack at the base of each stud. I believe we used over 2000 of them.......

Just been looking at stud welding and the amps involved

425 amps for a 1/4" (6mm) stud, no wonder you need a specialized power source with capacitor discharge!
