Stuck in snow?

Left foot braking or more technically cadence braking is used quite a lot when tractions lost. Used it a lot in the Defender as they're really only 2 wheel drive when it comes down to it. That is until I had the rear locker fitted now it just walks up everything.

Just a primitive form of traction control.

SWARi said------ thats what yer left foots for-------- in stupid cars !! was driving one ( merc) the other day in the snow, turn off the ESP and get yer left foot working, got round much better.
its just complicated on mercs not just a switch ! you have to go into the computer settings which is not as easy when travelling sideways. coz the steering wheel keeps moving.

Provided useful yesterday getting a beastie up on the hill.

Keeping it on topic whilst up the hill had great fun driving up those slopes in about a foot of snow. Had a white out moment where it because quite challenging to remember where the track was.

Whilst Dad was gralloching his fixed the dodgy wire which meant I could have the rear diff locked and made quite a difference. 110 spent almost all of the time with at least central diff locked and on the hill had the rear.

Dogs had fun too, completely disappearing in drifts at some points as did I at one point...

I was driving a Scania and trailer skip truck up cat and fiddle one year ( WOW !about 20years ago !!) with a empty skip, as the M62 was blocked and was having difficulty, until I lifted the skip and hung it over the trailer on the arms at the back that gave me more traction, even though it was only half a ton, but out on the arms made it more weight on the rear axle and less on the front that and throwing the difflock in and out got me home, until I reversed in the drive and as I live on a VERY slight hill it skidded sideways and I knocked corner part of the slate house name off the drive wall all that way no problem then hit my own wall !! ------- HA was only looking at that yesterday funny enough ! EEE It brings back MAMMERIES

Not had much snow here, but I've had 120kgs of sand, a shovel, an arctic sleeping bag and half a dozen carpet tiles in the boot (rwd lexus) since Xmas.l also have an Oxford oil cooled on the back seat - so plenty of weight over the rear wheels.

Probably why my average petrol usage has increased 12%


Still cheaper than the lpg shogun - IF it worked - but probably not as much fun.

Never had a problem even in deep snow with my Reliant Regal Supervan III on skinny crossply tyres. On the other hand my Smart Fortwo gets stuck with just 1mm of snow on the ground !

I've had my ForTwo 7 years and not got stuck once, does have traction control though.

I watched someone in a front wheel drive using a similar technique to get up a snow covered hill, he kept dabbing the brakes to transfer the power from the spinning wheel to the other with more traction, that and a bit of winding the steering side to side got him up the hill

Yep, good sound technique and not a million miles from a manual version of todays modern traction controls, driver was possibly brought up on Mini's and 11/1300's they were good fun in the snow. One of the best, a Morris 1000 with a concrete stay weight in the boot.. 16'' skinny cross ply with a bit less air in 'em.. brilliant ( better than a LR in a lot of conditions )

I have Quaifes in the 90 and they do make a difference, I don't like lockers in the snow and ice and a bias torque diff is more sensible imo. What a lot of people do in the normal 90/110/RR/D1 etc vehicles equipped with the LT230 open centre diff is fail to lock the centre diff when they start to spin. It only takes a few moments of spinning one axle to stuff the tiny bearings in that centre diff.

Not by us, the technique seems to be, press loud pedal until wheels spin then sit there wondering why it's not going anywhere

Your not the only one, my disco has seven seats ------somewhere------ you can only see one, most of the time !! and thats coz I need to sit on it, Thje missus want me to take her to work when the snow was down it was a half hr job to get to the seat!!

Seat belted and straped up I hope. An old college of mine nearly died from quite a much smaller object striking him during a mildish car crash.

Re driving in snow ( not getting the missus into the car sub thread)

Had "proper"Saabs as well,designed for the snow they had tall skinny wheels and a smooth underside. They also had the handbrake operating on the front wheels the handbook stated that in wheel spin situations you should apply the handbrake 2clicks to re gain traction.
