Stubborn bearing outer ring - Weld it!

I was trying to replace a wheel bearing on the landy last night, and couldn't for love nor money get the outer rings to seperate from the hub. That is until I remembered that I could shrink them by putting a nice fat weld bead all the way round the bearing surface. They popped straight out!

Is this a fairly common practice, or are there better alternatives to removing stubborn rings?

Well I've done it that way a few times, and it's always worked for me. No doubt there are other (better?) ways...

Fairly standard practice applying heat to expand stuff so wouldn't worry mate, our lass is always playing hell with me 'cos everytime she opens the freezer there are various Lambretta engine bearings in there that I am shrinking to fit

Good to know. I've not expanded in to the kitchen yet, but i'm fully intending on using the freezer, dishwasher and oven when i have the opportunity - all for landrover fixing you understand, not for cooking or cleaning.

Pretty much what I would do, weld straight across the inner and outer then brutalise it with a hammer.. Gotta weld them together so you dont split the inner and outer race when hammering leaving one still on

Damn, i didn't think of doing it like that.
