Jack a driven wheel up on car, van etc., handful of nuts, bolts, washers with paraffin inside, then strap it to the wheel and leave it ticking over for half an hour.
Get hold of an old tumble drier and turn the heater off.
As mentioned wrap the jerry in an old duvet or something.
I second, third and fourth the chain idea. Once you've tried to fish the last nuts/ bolts / gravel out of a tank you realise the chain method would have been far better.
The design of the cans is such that they have loads of hard to access areas. For example where the vent pipe is tacked into place. You would need somthing to get in all these places as anything left and you may as well have never bothered starting.
But, yes, I totally understand the sand issue also. Those £100 cans may start to look cheap soon...
