Stripping back....

I'm doing my floor at the moment... and I'd like to strip off the existing textured finish before coating with a 2k epoxy mastic. However, underneath the red topcoat is a 'ruberized' coating which tends to jam up the wire wheel on my grinder.
Any suggestions as to how I should proceed?

What kind of wire wheel is it? I've always had great success with knotted wire wheels on the rubbery stuff.

Thanks @grim_d, that's what I was using. I think the problem was lack of perseverance on my part. Back at it today, thinking maybe I should have forked out the grand or so it would've cost to have it sandblasted





.... anyway, I've been doing the awkward areas (there are a few) with this, and the flatter areas with a strip & clean disk

I never tried the cup ones only the flat ones, gives you more of a "scooping" action on it.

I didn't get on with the cup ones...they're harder to control I think. The flat ones let you work an edge rather than swirls which I think makes them more aggressive.

I used a flap disk when doing mine. It heats up and fires it about 1-2 inches down the body panel as a sand like texture but then it just wiped off with my hand. as you get going on a patch it gives a bit of smoke but once I got to metal and cleared a little area then there was no problem at all as I was only clearing the material with the edge of the disk

@Cosantoir Yeah, I'm reluctant to use flap disks because I don't trust myself not to overdo it, as they can be quite aggressive/abrasive. As it is this cars been around the block a bit, stripping the spare wheel well was a revelation .... Think pinholes, colour coat, no primer and scaley metal underneath

I've used one of those oscillating tools with a flat blade on the front. Allows you to take a good sheet off, then get the wire wheel on the leftover stubborn bits.

I've done similar with a heat gun and scraper....gets a good layer off and then it's a lot easier to go at with the wire wheel.
