Stretch CV boots ?

If the C/V wont come off the shaft after the 3rd whack I will fit one
We use "Mechatec" boots & have the air operated "stretcher"
It is the clips that let the boots down
(I only know of one other thing that will stretch that far with out tearing)

I leave the shaft in the gearbox and beat the joint off with a hammer (used to doing Mercedes rears with the non removable Spring clip), slide a new one on, beat the joint back in, 3/4 inch gun on the hub nut, job jobbed...

But how do you stop the shaft coming out of the inner joint rather than the outer coming off ?

hold onto the shaft with you hands... never failed for me...

I think I need to do the inner ones anyway, so may have to take the driveshafts out.

It is the clips that let the boots down

Yeah arnt they a pain!! even with the proper tool, the ears want to do grip and crimp one side only, I normally have to reshape them before crimping with side cutters. Also the plastic'y boots are very resilient but end up stronger than the clips grip in cold weather, as soon as you put full lock on they pull off.

Thin stainless hose clips are good for the hard French plastic boots
The original clips corrode but the boots last ages

Yep thats what I use------ but cant always get the screw holder past abs sensors etc or upright curvature.

Not that small amount of weight on a small diameter
I have used literally hundreds of them

If they did----- you could use two clips screwed back to back so that it has two screws apposing each other, but like db I havnt had a problem.

Mind you, in the past I found a small hole in a boot. Leaking grease, so a MOT failure.
It was Sunday afternoon.
Out with a puncture repair kit, clean the greases of with solvent. Rough the area up and applied a puncture repair patch.
It passed the MOT the next day.

I used to race stock cars at an old quarry. The rough track was very hard on cv boots & they regularly got punctured. I repaired them by cleaning and super gluing the edges of the hole back together then putting some self amalgamating tape around the boot.

I have heard of people using two boots rubber inside with a larger harder plastic type slid over the first but the second only fastened to the shaft
