I was welding a crack on an aluminum plate on the back of a semi trailer. Stopped drilled the crack and tig welded it, was about an 18" crack, it slowly started to crack as the base metal cooled, from the bottom for bout 3". It was about 42 degrees out and had the back of the trailer in the shop with no wind on it.
Was wondering if it would of been better to mig or stick weld it to limit heat in the surrounding metal. Had to have my rig welder up to about 180 amps which I am sure put a lot of heat into the surrounding metal.
I was using 3/32 pure tungsten which due to the high amperage the ball was molten.
