You shouldn't be pulling a gearbox onto an engine with enough force to strip a chocolate thread. If it's all lined up it should pop on with little effort. If it needs force, you're bending something.

what can also help are the extra long nuts sold to join two lengths of studding together. Spreads the load.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that a nut only ever "connects" along one and a half times the diameter of the thread. Anything longer than that does not contribute to the load carrying capacity.

Quite right, that's how clutch centres get pushed out and other damage.
No more than a bit of assistance should be used from threads, really they just want using to keep it lined up and from falling apart while you wiggle, twist and curse.

I treat even 8.8 studs and bolts as toffee it's NOT high tensile.....fit for nothing.....
any proper jobs always get 10.9's or even 12.8's (spring shackles etc)
