Strange reaction to copper table!

Odd one this, I was in the pub last week and the only table left was a copper topped one. As soon as I sat down I could taste the metal as if it was wafting up a miasma of chemicals, it got so bad after a few minuites I had to move.
It set my teeth off and they are still playing up now!
All but one of my mates thought I was talking boll##cks and moned about moving.
Does anyone know what causes this?

That happens with brass, that's why they plate brass cutlery.

I recently threw a fork away because the plating had worn through and it made the food taste horrible.

i get this sort of thing iff i drink from a metal cup (un-painted) or drink can...never been able to drink from tins (soft drinks or beer) most of my life.

drink cans are coated. the contents only comes ito contact with the metal via the ring pull opening

I can remember watching something on tv a few years ago about the same food cooked in copper,aluminium and stainless steel pans tasting different, due to the metal surface reacting with the food to different extents

Aluminium gives you altzheimers, Copper Verdegris is poisonous. I don't think chrome is to pleasent either, but stainless was meant to be non reactive or at least contamiates food the least. I suspect plastic will contaminate to some degree. plastic containers alyway smell plasticky

Hmmm well I don't think it was coated or had any polish on it.

there was an article early on this year or sometime last year where by copper kills germs and copper was going to be incorporated into clothes which has happened so it must have an active element about it

Perhaps the cleaning solution they use has certain chemicals that reacted with it. What finish did it have? was it pinky in colour? freshly polished like a new penny, or dull like an old penny?

Heard the phrase "copper bottomed"? This refers to wooden boats that were coated in copper to kill the barnacles and other sea life that usually attaches itself to hulls. So if it was good for that it's not a surprise to hear you may have a sensitivity to copper particularly if your skin acidity is reacting with the metal.

FWIW, a piece of copper will stop bird baths from discolouring.

Perhaps the table had been bleached recently that could have caused a reaction with the bleach copper and you ?

I've been there when up at Beacons Festival.

Can't use copper in brewing any longer though. Stainless all the way.

Certain types of plastic does give off harmfull stuff. Plastic water bottles left in the sun are worst. Seemingly the type of plastic is banned in the US for bottled water but not here

This is why you shouldn't keep bottles of bottled water in the car.

If it was dry and summery, you probably either experienced a large static discharge or formed a battery with the salts from your sweat. That would explain the taste and the tooth reaction...

Oh, and if it was wet out, you might even have been being electrocuted!
