strange pricing

My son used to be the manager of a shoe wholesalers. I don't think I ever paid more than £2.50 for a pair of decent shoes and if in the discontinued ranges then often 10p or 20p. These weren't staff rates but rather the normal prices that any trade visitor would have paid. Obviously not expensive shoes like Clarkes, Doc Martin etc. Good quality safety / rigger boots were around £10 !

The company my son worked for didn't sell on the internet until he suggested listing the discontinued lines on eBay. Something that previously they would sell for peanuts as clearance then was fetching, say, an average of £15.
BTW there was a pole dancing club opposite the warehouse so the "entertainers" used to come in for their stilettos. Wondered why my son had handfuls of free entrance vouchers for the club ! He also did a good trade for transsexuals / transvestites as company stocked or could get a specialist range of ladies style footwear in larger men's sizes.

Ive known Distributors (welding wire) give their customer a bigger discount than we gave to them ie selling at a loss. "Its to keep other distributors out" ive been told.....and they can make their money on the other items.

my brother worked for a large company who sold products to another large company who sounds like something you'd put on your feet shal we say.
the brothers company sold everything to them at a loss.
and the reason for it...

when you walked into any meeting with prospective customers, the fact they were on your résumé was a big thing from the word go, it brought in business.

I bought a huge pack of screws from Screwfix, think it was £200 worth and I'm about halfway through it, five years later.
At the time, I showed it to my mate who was a branch manager at Jewsons; he couldn't but the screws from his head office cheaper than I got them over the counter from Screwfix.

That isn't to start a whole "Is Screwfix good or bad" but more to illustrate that company's approach to pricing just seems to be a random number generator...

'er in-doors, the step Daughter, the Daughter in law and my Daughter are all thick as thieves together and all of them do regular monthly leading brand make-up parties for the CD's, TS's, TV's, and Pre & Post Op's, etc. here in Norfolk, Cambridge, Leeds and even Nijmegen & Rotterdam in Holland.

You think Travis is bad... Jewsons is a lot worse... Both take the **** royally with shelf prices....

I found that every time you get your monthly account bill from Jewsons the prices would be nothing like what they'd originally quoted you, so you end up in an argument with the accounts people every single month.

Can't be doing with that behaviour, so I just use Huws Gray, nice polite helpful staff, no hassle and their prices aren't bad either.

builders merchants are generaly a joke, things pop up on account you had 6 months ago, stuff pops up twice and as said prices are seemingly random.
then they wonder why you stop useing them and buy off various online supplyers and screwfix ect. because i value knwing what things are costing

I don't deal with travis perkins anymore. Spent hundreds of thousands at my local branch, they always said list prices were to keep head office happy but occasionally took the initiative to rip me off when I wasn't paying full attention. Smart move TP and that's why there is never much of a wait to get served. The other locally owned merchant has not a fraction of their buying power but there is always a wait to get served there nowadays.

To be fair some of it is legal stuff but there are limits and I don't want to barter over everything I buy and have some worm behind the counter take advantage when it suits

I went into Tavis Perkins today to get one small pot of fire cement. (1kg) the shelf price was £15. 49

I laughed at it and said to the man behind the counter i'm going to Wilcos where its £4.50, he had a rummage on his computer and came up with £3.60 inc vat

I left baffled.

Maybe they run an in-convenience store ?

I came across an online inconvenience store yesterday. Went to Parker Steel's website as amongst some other material I need some 100 x 100 x 10 steel angle. Using their online pricing tool, a 6 metre length is £87 plus VAT, but I only need 1.5 metres - Parker Steel's price for a single 1.5M cut length? £108 plus VAT!

Normally I buy full lengths of steel, on the basis that the leftovers always get used eventually, but I can't see that happening with a "spare" 4.5M of this chunky angle, which is going to be heavy as well as awkward to store in my workshop.

I hate to have a women dressed up as (say) a 3rd year vet student; walking up and down on my back in them telling me that I'd be a naughty boy and had to cut down on my treats.

Aren't vets lovely. I've met a few recently and they were all delightful.

Builders merchants are annoying and don't get my money much of the time. I had a look at something as simple as loft insulation a few weeks ago. Buildbase website said £50 plus VAT per roll. I have an account and made the effort to phone. £20 per roll or something. Tried SIG and because I don't have an account with them they could only do a 75% discount so £20 per roll. Ended up buying a whole load off some guy on eBay for £15 per roll and they were delivered from my local SIG.

Maybe they find enough people to rip off to balance the lack of customer loyalty which does result from that sort of run around.

I don't see the point, there is usually no one serving on the counter in these places, seeing a mad price I would have just walked out and never came back. I guess they don't want to faff about with small sales under a tenner ?


Of course the most heinous crime is that 5 donuts cost 65p, and one costs 30 p each. I've never worked that one out either.

They don't seem all that interested if it is under a grand either. I haven't tested over a grand yet - I spend more time looking for suppliers when it is that much. The plus side is that tends to end up keeping local specialist suppliers in business.

When I used to sell tools for a living I once bought some Neon Terminal screw drivers for 4p each. pliers for 50 each pair was wrapped with a test cert showing they has passed a insulation test, they were even quite good!
I just feel people charge the most they can get away with

always get my timber from a small place, prices arn't bad and they actualy care
