Hi ALL I have been reading the posts on gas bottle stoves and i fancy a stove for my garage ,i found an 18" dia garden roller that is in two 18x9 halves it is cast iron and weighs a kin lot ,would it do for a stove and is possible to weld onto it with a mig ?also how would the flue be able to be sealed,any help advice welcome,has anyone else done this??

If the roller drum is cast, theres a possiblity it could crack when heated,you can weld it with mig, personally i`d probably use arc, a dissimilar or cast rod and a bit of preheat. That said, it`s not exactly critical, so you might get away with normal mild steel mig, still preheat though.

As for sealing the flue, weld it straight on, or have a look in the stoves thread, a bit of talk about sleeving lately

If I was you I'd go hang about the Local tip/disposal point (you know oppersite where you work) on a saturday/sunday morning and see if you can rescue a gas bottle before it get's tipped.. once in the site it's stealing to remove them but if you can get some one to donate it to you before they go in, jobs a good un!

BTW, if you do get one I'll lend you my plasma, to cut it up with, and could probably loan you some argoshield to mig it up with.......dusty.

Here is a sketch for a BBQ but can be applied to use as a stove just dont cut the 1/4 section out on the top drum it is more suited for larger workshops uses two 45 gallon oil drums the second barrel acts as a heat exchanger.If using for a heater dont install the front flue and put a bag of dry sand in the bottom of the firebox helps stop the drum burning out so quick. Can also be used with just the firebox and no heat exchanger.

Hi Dusty thanks for tip now "found "a gas bottle and removed valvle and filled with water will now start sourcing other bits eg 4" pipe for flue etc ,plan to put it out thru garage wall and up so need about 4 yards of pipe or flue, thanks to to others for tips cheers

really sorry to hijack your thread, but can these be used inside an existing fireplace? I have been searching for a cheap second hand stove I can restore and use in the fireplace in the living room, I have a source of free firewood and the stoves are a lot more efficient so one of these would be perfect. Also can they withstand the heat from coal?

If you have a cast-iron roller - these are worth more as antiques, so probably better to restore it and sell it - buy a stove on the profit

Good stoves can be made from standard steel wheel rims. Chop out the centre of the end 1 or 2, and weld a bead around the joins. Then just need sheet for the ends - or fabricate some doors.

Have seen a nice metal forge made from a couple. - fill with smokeless coal - and add an air supply.
