evening all.

has anyone ever made a "old engine oil" fueled stove??

ive used these ones that burn diesel, where the diesel drips onto a tray.

im thinking of a simliar idea but with old eng oil in a gas bottle.

poss with some sort of boiller in it to run a couple of rads on a gravity fed sytem with a header tank.

do you think its possible to be able to make one that burns old oil???

When I was a lad the local garage had a had a pot belly stove that ran on waste engine oil and water dripped in on to hot fire bricks I think,

Bear in mind you need to a licence to operate a waste oil burner, and it must be of an approved make.

That said, a thread in the "Projects" section would be interesting.

Waste oil always seems to burn better if you can get it pre heated a bit.
If you are going to force it through some sort of jet to atomise it 80*C seems to be pretty good.
With a drip feed it could still be handy to wrap the oil feed pipe around some bits that will get hot.


We use large waste oil burners in work but the waste oil is heated and forced in by a pump. The waste oil is 80*c and forced through a jet at about 30 psi with a fan providing extra air around the jet for better combustion.

There are two setups side by side and the drums are around 15 foot diameter.
The burmers use around 10 l/min so a couple of thousand litres a day..depending how much work is on. The drum has 4 tonnes of stone in, circulating like a cement mixer, the stone gets up to around 170*C then is emptied by a chute to be mixed with other stuff to make tarmac.

I used to have a diesel fired 'wood-burning' stove on my boat. It had a narrow pipe (like brake pipe) in a spiral in the main chamber, so the oil / diesel coming in to be burnt first passed through the hot pipe to pre-heat it. Must have got pretty hot I reckon.

Other than that there was nothing to it - a vertical cylinder, completely empty (apart from the pipe spiralling down through the middle), that the oil dripped out of a pipe onto the base-plate of. A tap on the outside to control flow rate. The rest was just like a woodburnder - flue / baffles etc etc.

You just lit a fire lighter or something that would burn for a while to get it going and let the fuel start dripping on it.

Going to do the same thing on my workshop woodburner.

My son uses a waste engine oil boiler, bought new 5 years ago for around £5000, As per wyn's post we wrapped the the 10mm copper feed line around the exhaust about 12 times on it's way to the small pre heating tank.Also operates thro' a pressurised atomiser, Chamber needs cleaning quite often to remove the very fine ash deposits, But when it's running there is absolutely no smoke from the stack,all you can see is a little heat haze,

right will have a crack at this stove, when im not so busy.
