I used single skin in the living room and swapped to twin wall below the ceiling. Never thought of checking it for failure in the loft! This is what happens when your double skinned flue pipe fails. Luckily Mrs Micmac was only burning old knitting wool and was present when it happened. The ones in the loft appear to be ok. Will take it all down and inspect the insides of all the pipes. Won’t be until the warmer weather comes though

heat comes of pipe into room from flu, so single skin allows more heat from the flu, though not so good with young kids. Why would you use single skin flue pipe?
Genuine question - log burner install planned for later in the year.
This. Twin wall wastes the heat but is safer if surrounded by people with no common sense or uncontrolled children. I am not sure but suspect its also in some regs somewhere.heat comes of pipe into room from flu, so single skin allows more heat from the flu, though not so good with young kids.
How did it fail ?
From what I understand not all twin wall is equal and some of the quality varies quite a bit!Haven’t taken it to bits yet, I presume the internal wall has failed somehow. When you prod the external wall of the flue pipe there is no resistance.
I dont recall the make, it was nearly 20 years ago it was installed. I do remember the flue wasn’t cheapFrom what I understand not all twin wall is equal and some of the quality varies quite a bit!
I like the black flue and the tiles behind. SWMBO mentioned something like what you have have thereI've a Scania silencer sat at the top mine as the flue goes through a void between the ceiling and the old chimney breast above
