I sprayed the exposed steel on my pillar drill with toolstation wax spray, and its lasted all this winter, I'm happy with it. And its dirt cheap.
That's one problem solved.
but u dont want to be cleaning oil of beds slideways and handwheels every time u want to use somethingnice drop of engine oil does the trick, its not as light as machine oil but very good and cheap.
another good bare metal preserver is two stroke oil !!!! this is used to fog outboard engines,
also power steering fluid used in model engines that get laid up for long periods.
the thing I like about a drop of diesel engine oil is it thick and sticks well.
just remember any oil is far better than none, we don't want that rust stuff on our toys.

I give mine a liberal coat of duck oil after use then every now and then when passing. I also have a cuipple of dust sheets over the machines to keep grinding dust off.

I prefer to keep my tool a little slippery so its ready for action at a moments notice, no good getting caught out having to find lube
