I am cross drilling a lot of tube (42x3mm) at the moment. The majority are all ok but occasionally I get drill wander and the hole either ends up sliding to one side going in the causing it to be wrong coming out the bottom (I am drilling all the way though). The holes are 12mm and I am using Dormer drills. Pilot drilling at 3mm, then stepping to 7mm followed by the 12mm.
This is really to save the waste of materials and also time. I need to eliminate the wander. The drill is solid - no play. The play is coming from the drill bit. No matter if it is centre punched or not, it still happens
I don't want to mess around with the mill as this is set for quite a long production run.
Could I get away using an end mill in the drill? This would eliminate the pilot drilling stages? Any suggestions?
