What if it was recovered after you'd been paid out and the insurance company auctioned it off?
The problem with reporting it is that the Police would probably need to disclose the source of the information leading to them investigating the case, in the event it went to court.

Big dilemma, the perpetrators need to be put away but the consequences could be an issue.
I'm with Si, whistle blow to insurance company, it's their gig and, no fear of reprisals, as your out of the equation!
i dont see the difference, if it is reported then its obvious it has been identified which is only ever going to be done by the original owner no one else would recognise it. and the insurance company would want to verify it was the right item.
what it boils down to is does the op want the thieves caught, if he is happy with the payout then let it go on the other hand if he wants his gear back then there is only 1 option
As it's probably not an item of great sentimental value, you've been paid out and the seller is probably an innocent party I'd be tempted to just ignore it and move on.
If it's an antique, one-of-a-kind museum piece then it's different but you'd still have to talk to your insurers.
no need at all they already have it on file as stolen complete with description and maybe serial numbers
....... therefore the source of information would be in their evidence.
Why? They'd need to show the ebay listing, how they found it is immaterial.
For the CPS to prosecute they would need to know the source of information to the Police if for no other reason than the the Defence would ask. So the information would need to be supplied to the defence before the case went to court. Why? They'd need to show the ebay listing, how they found it is immaterial.
