As it's probably not an item of great sentimental value, you've been paid out and the seller is probably an innocent party I'd be tempted to just ignore it and move on.
If it's an antique, one-of-a-kind museum piece then it's different but you'd still have to talk to your insurers.

Tempting perhaps, but supposing someone else had earlier not turned a blind eye - he might not have got burgled in the first place.

Contact your insurance then the police - If it is your stolen genny and it's recovered, whilst it belongs to the insurance company you have 1st purchase option .... so inform the police that you will be negotiating with the insurance for it's return to you, so that they cannot dispose of it 'for police funds'.

I agree with this. Contact your insurance company but they've already paid out on it and it'll be more hassle than its worth for them to try to get it back from the seller and then sell it to make some money back. On their big table of sums and depreciation it's probably zero value anyway.

You can report it to the police but I suspect they'll take a note of it and the item will be sold and gone before they get round to doing anything.

There is a defence to handling stolen goods if you bought the time in good faith for a reasonable price and couldn't have known it was stolen. So if it's a scumbag he'll use that excuse and if it's a legitimate person they lose their money.

you say it is yours but you would need some proof before the police would act? Do you have a serial number for example or something that makes certain that it once belonged to you?

I wouldn't get too excited about reporting things to the cops that you find on ebay. I was knocked for £700 worth of vouchers. (empty envelope turned up). The seller did this to about 10 people. I reported the crime to the police, all the evidence. I never got paid out from paypal and the police decided to drop the case. Even though they had everyone who had been knocked and the person who committed the crime. A mate of mine sells alloy wheels and has people turn up with stolen cheques and all sorts of issues like this.
I reckon the old bill will say thanks for reporting it, make an entry on a file and then go back to watching the telly in the cop shop.

Its the insurance company that needs to be informed they are the ones that know what the legal position of the generator is. If its been recovered and resold then its not stolen any more and you'd be wasting police time telling them. Same with Ebay, if the seller owns it legally you'd be persecuting him unfairly.

If they say they bought the item in good faith for a reasonable price.
Then you will have to take them to court to prove ownership and you may not win, I was told this buy the police when I had my car radio nicked.
Also if the serial number is ground of then it can be assumed it is nicked ,if one number is defaced then you can't prove ownership or that it is stolen.

if the item is stolen, even if this is the 15th owner they are still in posession of stolen goods, and are still liable.

if the item is recovered & sold, then there will be a record of it & no comeback on the current seller.

the seller may well have a lock up full of nicked goods.....or not.

your doing nothing is what they want...that way they get away with it and you pay more for your insurance, every time the scrote nicks someting else.

Call from a public phone & dont give them your details.

The only thing to do is the correct thing, which is report it to the insurance company as it belongs to them, and leave it to them to deal with. If they want to follow it up, they will. If not, so be it - at least you gave them a chance.
