stolen genny on ebay

A genny that was nicked when i was burgled about 2 years ago has appeared on ebay, its now for sale 30 miles away, i absolutley know its mine cos its unique, i got paid out on the insurance, i would like it back but i'm afraid of reprisals if i go to the cops just incase the seller is the actual scroat that burgled us although 2 years on i doubt it will be.
any suggestions as to what i should do?

If you've got the insurance money get a mate to bid on it in the normal way, although bear in mind it belongs to the insurance company, unless they recovered it and sold it on.

It would be a bit of a bummer if they're keeping an eye on it and then they confiscated it from you, having bought it back!

irregardless of current ownership, it is still stolen goods, and if not yours then the insurance companies.

personally I would report it to plod...

it isnt going to get it back but ask the seller to go and look at it as your a prospective buyer , then if its yours phone the police and have them go remove it after that i wouldnt say

Id phone the police. Legally speaking its not yours but the insurance company may well give it back to you

Couldn't you tell the police and make sure they act with discretion, I'm sure this is a situation they've encountered before and can handle.

they wouldnt be interested not for a pittance of an amount and the old bill will hardly bat an eye lid .its a mountain of paperwork

If I was you I will not discuss it further and I will contact the police .Give them all the info! Of course item is not belongs to you anymore but in a such a way you will prevent any future burglary

Handling stolen goods is a crime, failing to report a crime is also a crime. If you don't report that crime you're comitting a crime so now you have to report that crime so that the rest of us can sleep easy that WE haven't risked comitting a crime of failing to report the crime of you failing to report the crime of handling stolen goods.

I believe there are exceptions for sexual and terrorist crimes, you can be prosecuted if you know there is a crime about to be committed, e.g. by someone you know.

Just a thought but the person selling it might not be the one who stole it, i doubt who ever stole thought about hanging onto it for a couple of years hoping you would forget they were more than likely after some fast cash. Dont get me wrong i am not sticking up for no one here but just saying be careful pointing fingers as it could land you up a certain creek without a paddle.
