Stihl Chainsaw???

Does anyone have any experience with these?:

I've used a heavy chainsaw before but have had a call of late to go mobile. Being that I don't own one and skint this seemed ok...
I like Stihl and this seems almost "too cheap" to turn down...

I'll be clearing a small section of forest with a friend over Christmas and there's some forestry work for the new year...
I'm not one for cutting trees down needlessly but I will be making a point of planning and replanting as I go along...

Just asking for peoples views on this model as they usually go for £300+?!?!

there an excelent saw but e deffo would want to see it started and running before buying whatever the price there definition and yours might be 2 diffent opinions if its not got much compression or is knocking a little there not worth repairing thats all i can say

I've been getting calls from friends that have decided to cut trees down with "little saws" then found themselves taking hours to shift them
Usual ones that have been at the bottom of the garden since before they moved in and "wanted to clear some space"

Being from the "Wirral" I'm a little concerned, but if it works I can get parts...
Just hope the cylinders in good nick, comes with a 24" bar so I can get started straight away

thats a very old model i haven't seen of them for years but were a good saw i had a 045 which were older and a great saw. parts could be a problem
but well worth a punt if its starting and running well and make sure chain break is working

the stihl 038 with an 18" bar is suitable for most jobs but that depends on how big the trees are. i have six stihls 020,024,028,038,064,084, and have done a vast range of work with them and my most used are the 024 and 038. ive had three of the saws for 22yrs and apart from bar and chain have only had to buy one spark plug and a coil so they are definately a good saw to buy , same as most things though , look after it and it should last well.

It'll only take an 18" bar though so a little worried I'll be "carving" for longer

great saw id prefer it to the huscavarna, heavy enough but if youve ever battlled with a heavy homelite that saw will feel light as anything

I'd personally prefer the husky for working with all day, nice n lite, the stihl will come very heavy quickly.

Theoretically, you can still cut down a 36 inch diameter tree with the Husky with an 18" bar.

As stated above make sure the saw starts easily, runs and cuts well before parting with your cash, to many worn out saws on fleabay.

Tell the seller your going to collect it and you want to try it out before handing over the beer tokens.


I own/use a Husky Top Handle 338 14" bar, Husky 42 14" bar, Husky 372 18" to 24" bar and an Echo 900EVL 36" bar, I prefer to use the Husky 42, nice 'n' lite and cuts well with a sharp chain.

PS. There are 2 saw I'd like a Husky 346XP to replace the 42 and a Stihl 090 or 090G just because its got to be in the line up.......

Just found a place full of spares for it in the US, could probably build one out of the spares lol...

I'll quiz the guy some more, if it sounds "dodgy" I might go with the Husky...

Really wanted something I could work on too though, I'm not a fan of "plastic", besides that I was hoping lifting the Stihl would keep me fit too haha...

I have a firewood chainsaw from Machine Mart, a Dynamac with a 16" bar which cuts fine as long as the chain is kept sharp as any saw should. I think if I needed a saw for a proper job I would be looking at buying a new Husquvarna or Stihl as they are the industry standard not a clapped out offering from ebay which has probably had several none too considerate owners. Stihl pride themselves on supplying parts for all their saws so you should be able to get parts for any you get hold of.

I would go for a new one but being that I'm now out of work I'm skint...

I'd love a new Stihl or a Husky but being that they're £300+ new that's forcing me to make the choice between a PortaMIG and a saw, the latter being the one that will get less use than the former...

the bar on the husky doesn't fit the saw correctly the adjusting slot is sticking out a long way and there looks to be a lot more wear on the bar than on the saw
the stihl looks to have very little wear for that age of saw and all the stickers are still on it and paint looks perfect around the trigger most of the paint wear and looks to be from hauling it around in the back of a trailer or a pickup
just wondering if it had been re-sprayed at some stage or if this guy bought it reconditioned or from new

I just spoke to the guy about the Stihl, he's been using it for occasional use for a few years and looked after it, supposedly...

He says it's a good runner, with good compression...
He's even offered to let me see it running before I pay for it...

He's genuinely retired, he's a builder/garden maintennance man, selling off all his trade equipment to stump up some extra money to enjoy himself with, and to keep the Mrs happy by clearing out all of his stuff...

Can't say fairer than that


When having a play is there anything specific I should look out for???
Edit: Other than loads of smoke, grunting and it peeing oil everywhere...
