The only issue I have is that it can be a bit difficult to fire the rods up sometimes, but as you say they are virtually bomb proof for hobby use

make a srike plate up on your return clamp
start the rod off on that then transfer to your job

I've heard of that before, will give it go, got some off cuts of 6mm plate that will be perfect for the job

I think in view of your sets stated capability and the fact that you don't use many rods 2.5 mm will most likely be the best choice for your needs

2.5mm here the rods last used was elga p45s 70-100amps got a full box of esab rods 2.5mm same specs better rods to say my rods was years old but sometimes difficult to start them
