Oh my god, that is unbelievable. It must turn at about 1 RPM to have the right SS.
Is there a chunk missing from the faceplate/chuck/center in the 2nd pic?
Does it run?

I've got some photos somewhere of the vertical lathe at Markham's in Chesterfield used to cut the 8.5m drilling faces of Channel Tunnel drilling machines. My dad and I visited when they'd finished the first machine and were testing it. Now that was a big lathe. Sadly all gone now.

There's something you don't hear very often, "vertical lathe". I seem to recall that in America, Webster Benetts were referred to as "vertical turret lathes".

I recall working on a huge lathe years ago. It was either a Craven or a Richards, time dulls the memory, and was basically for facing. The bed was about 10 feet long and the chuck was the same diameter! Biggest lathe I ever carried was a roll lathe. The headstock alone, without the chuck, weighed just shy of 50 tons!!

And I'm guessing the museum is at Tanfield near Stanley? OH is from Durham and We've just bought a house at Broom Park. Guess where I shall be next time we're up there?

Shefeild forge masters have a 260 tonne x 3 m diameter lathe, with a cab on the tool post !

Only seen it once, almost 30 years ago. Awesome engineering. Am I right in thinking it reverses direction almost instantly?
