Step drill with broken stem

Don't suppose anyone knows how I would repair? I would be thinking of putting the drill part in the lathe and boring the centre,, then while keeping the outer edge somewhat cool, brazing another stem in the centre hole, but, I doubt if I can bore the centre as it is hss. Tct drill and tct lathe tool any good for boring this?

For the effort involved, I'd just buy another one (or three) in Lidl or AliExpress. They are cheap and work very well

I was surprised at how well it drilled, 2nd hole it snapped, I think the stem is too inferior for the vibration etc, my idea was to braze in a thicker stem. Maybe another drill and better support for the work is whats needed.

I've had a handful of sets from ALdi / Lidl and will happily pick a couple more up if I see them anytime, amazing quality for some of the pieces that have had a lot of use and still cut very well.

For the dozen or so step drills I have, maybe 3 "feel" like better quality which is strange as they are all from cheapo sets.
I understand what you say about the broken one feeling great but for the money (and not knowing how to refit a shaft to something like that) I'd just buy a couple of new ones.

Not so easy to hold in the lathe so it would be good to confirm that is possible before going any further. The gap where the flutes are is quite big and the step is not very wide. Gripping a hardened piece in hardened jaws is not very secure.

If it is HSS, brazing should not hurt it as that is the whole point of HSS - it retains its hardness at high temperatures.

If it was absolutely necessary to make a hole in it for a new shank, an EDM tap disintegrator might be the way to go.

Probably easier to grind the snapped stump flat, braze on an oversize bit of round somewhere near center then center up the bit of round in the lathe?

Grind it down to a 26mm step drill while spinning it? Should be enough to chuck in a drill

Grind it flush weld a bit of 1/2" bar on it'll still work !

Yep, they are hard. The only time I've broken one was when I dropped it onto the floor and it cracked. The drill, not the floor.

Yep. Cheap ones off AliExpress are good too. My preference is to buy the ones with a decent shank, and not the hex shank made for a driver.
