Stellite rods

Hi all,earlier today i found an old box of rods at work....the box is marked "STELLITE 2"....they are years old,with the coating damaged on a lot of the rods and therefore not much use!
However i am interested in the intended purpose of the rods...ie...what was there use?.....i am aware they are a hard facing rod,but ive never seen or used these or any other facing rod before.
I have looked on there website,but there isnt much info apart from compositon and hardness.

Are they used on ac or dc?

If i scrape the broken coating off could i use these with tig or oxy/acet?

Stellite rods with cobalt are used to hard face and to build up a surface that is heat resistant, like on large wood saw teeth and valve seats.
There have been a lot of warnings the last few years, in the metal working sites about cobalt dust being dangerous.
I don't know how bad the fumes are when welding.

There was a Stellite factory at one time near Swindon, I think, must have been 40 years ago I went there on a college visit.
It was like hades, sparks flying everywhere and lots of gloom and molten metal.

Picked up a lot of discarded sprues from stellite/cobalt steel castings and found that you couls make small turning tools out of them.

That would be Deloro stellite.
