Steering Rack Restorers

The steering rack on my VW Phaeton has failed - seals have definitely gone as when I was trying to peel the boot back, I was presented with an impressive stream of hydraulic oil, directly on to my Jacobs.

It's not a common car, but I'm guessing the rack is fairly standard - does anyone have recommendations for rebuilders? New ones are eye watering, so I thought I might try the rebuild route.

Have you tried getting a price for an exchange one from a motor factors?

I had a quick look - only autodoc seems to stock them, and even then they don't seem to match my model.

I think VW will be around 1200 - might be the only option in the end.

+1 For WPS, I spoke to them recently, I’m going to send my rack to them and they’ll recon it and send it back, their prices are very good, for an old 911 it’s a fraction of the cost of any other option.

Another vote for Western Power Steering.

I had a rack issue with my Audi, bought a 'recon' rack from some random internet place. Failed within hours of being fitted. They replaced it (but not labour) with another... that lasted a week.
Seems their refurb consists of a new boot or two and half a tin of satin black.

Spoke to Western, who supplied me one of their racks -which has been spot on. Explained how they refurbished, and bench test them all. Filled me with some confidence.
