In reality, regardless of legislation, it is impossible to control, or remove stupidity. Over the years I have seen many things that can only be discribed as utter stupidity, performed by so called competent, experienced people.

• Foreloaders on tractors with safety cabs, telehandlers, and fork-lift trucks with operator protection and where no other people work in the vicinity will not normally need thorough examination.

This is the hse view...regarding farms!

Which is funny, because it’s hard to find a farm where there aren’t people working in the vicinity - often underneath or stood on the loader!

And on small farms with only one person there’s still always some point where they get out and work near and underneath lifting equipment.

@Bill Edwards I am fully aware of the situations I have spent over 40 years working in agriculture you will usually find trailers unhitching if on a pickup that the trailer ring has worn thin or the plate on top of the book has become damaged all down to poor maintenance or some one has used the drawbar and not put a pin in the bottom of it to stop it jumping out as far as failure and breakages go it's generally down to rough and mis use

It’s mostly idiots who don’t care.
Running gear that’s worn, not latching things through rushing (saw a trailer come off just a couple of weeks ago) - it’s all inexcusable.

There are huge amounts of failures, breakages, trailers unhitching etc on farms.
However the majority of incidents don’t result in serious injury to people so nobody in authority ever knows what goes on.
It’s only if an injury is very serious or a death occurs that the authorities ever find out about it.

I bought a 3 ton tipping trailer to use hauling stone from the quarry to my place and to shift soil about. I checked it over when I bought it and it seemed tired but sound.
I did a few quarry runs with it then used it to cart away debris when I was using the digger, I stupidly started to drive away from my tip site with the body still raised and as I drove across the slope the trailer rolled onto it's side.
No problem I thought, I will use the bucket of the digger behind the wheel of the trailer and pull it back upright, that's when the axle pulled off the chassis!
At some point in it's life it looks like a different axle was welded to the chassis, I say welded as it was done with stick and I think it was mostly slag and gravity attaching the chassis to the axle!
I hate to think what would of happened if the axle had parted company with the chassis when I was dragging 3 ton of stone back from the quarry on the main A road.

Least it was an old one, a few weeks ago, I repaired a 3 month old chinese one, that had come apart, mig welded but not penetration. Was going to buy one till I saw how poorly made it was. Similar thing, twisting on a slope.

Been there when I was a teenager with a contractors home built trailer with a wagon axle on when he was filling it with chopped grass on a sideslope and the body rolled off the axle

@Bill Edwards you must have a diffrent type of farmer around you if they are happy to work under a raised loader of telehandler and be prepared to haul a trailer without the hitch been locked it's not something I have come across on any farms I have worked on over the years

@Bill Edwards you must have a diffrent type of farmer around you if they are happy to work under a raised loader of telehandler and be prepared to haul a trailer without the hitch been locked it's not something I have come across on any farms I have worked on over the years

I reckon it's your farmers that're different!
Working under telehandlers tends to be fine as the valves which prevent them from dropping if a pipe bursts do work, but tractor loaders, diggers etc are usually another matter. But it's sometimes very difficult to not put yourself in a dangerous position if you need a job doing, and any lifting operation will usually put somebody at risk should something go wrong. So people take risks.

Just a few weeks ago I knew somebody to lose a trailer off because he hadn't lifted the PUH high enough to latch. Being deaf and rushing like an idiot he didn't notice that it hadn't clicked nor did he notice that when he lowered the arms down to take the weight off the lift rods they were still holding it. And obviously when out of the cab putting the pipes in he still didn't notice that it was not secured. The result could have been very nasty.

Heavy loads behind lightweight 2WD tractors can indeed be interesting. Try 8/9t unbraked behind a 62hp 2WD with only one working break, I've known it done on hills while snow was falling. Not great.

However, unless it's really heavy or without drawbar weight it's usually possible to be safe, it requires slow speeds in low gears using the engine to keep things controlled, slow and tedious but often possible. What is dangerous is if there's a risk of losing traction on a hill and getting dragged or pushed down with the wheels uselessly spinning the other way or held by a brake, if that happens it can be serious. Trailer brakes really are a wonderful thing to have.

And then on the other hand I went and linebored a Telehandler on a cattle farm back last month that had a current LOLER test and had an “advisory” that it had a bit of play in the headstock so he was having it welded and bored.

There are some good ones out there!
