Steel prices - what's going on?

I priced black mild steel to make a press, a few months ago, price yesterday was more than double. But the price on 80x5 flat was slightly less than I have been paying for the last few years!

Had the heads up from our steel supplier this afternoon that steel prices are on the rise again. Supposedly they will be kept at the same level up to christmas, then are set to rise 5- 10% in the new year.

Heard that as well Paul, also heard that certain sizes of box section are going to be in short supply for some reason.

The was a shortage of 12mm round sometime ago wasnt there! Must have been 18 months ago?

We seem to be getting anywhere upto 30% differences on supplier for the same thing at the moment, some holding back, some going up now it seems.

B***** this, just trying to price up a couple of things, seeing 40-70% increases on common things, not impressed.

8x4x 4mm=£74.63

I often use Parker Steel to get an idea for pricing up projects, over the last couple of weeks, the price of 1000x2000x10 has jumped from £110 to £185!

Just checked another size. 60x60x4 box has jumped from 38 quid to 64, that's around 70% increase!!!

Just revisiting this to see if I can actually afford some steel or not

1000 x 2000 x 10 is currently on Parkers at £173.02, so just slightly better, but much higher than before.

But, 60x60x4 is up again 75.65, that's near as damn-it twice what it was!!!

What is anyone else actually paying, I can't believe these increases

Not had those exact sizes, but as an indication: A 1000x2000x12mm plate last week - £140. 50x50x2.5 SHS £16.20 for 7.5m lengths.

Thanks Paul, that's a bit more reassuring, though I guess you get valued-customer discounts from your suppliers, rather than those of us DIYers who have very little ability to negotiate

Probably get it a bit cheaper - but not cheap enough. My steel account for the last few months is frightening

I bet that makes pricing jobs interesting, by the time your customer accepts the quote steel prices have gone up cutting into your profit margin!

Just been ringing round again, for another job, but also got some general prices..

local place:
8mm round - £3.19 inc vat
60x60x4 - £41.21 inc vat
1000x2000x10 - 165 inc vat (approx, not ex stock)

Parker Steel:
8mm round - £3.05 ex vat
60 x 60 x 4 - £75.65 ex vat
1000x2000x10 - £183.76 ex vat

So, the local stockholder is much more attractively priced!

Really? Thanks for the heads-up Paul.

When I get around to ordering the steel for my workbench, there'll be a couple of lengths of 60x60x4 box, some 50x100x4 angle (or there abouts) and the 1mx2mx10mm sheet, so that lot should bring the total up to a point where i might have a bit more bargaining power.
