Steel prices gone up by 80 quid(ish) a ton. Apparantly a shortage of steel despite all our best endevours with weigh-ins. All the suppliers up our end reporting the same - any one else heard this?

I was only joking this morning about people who make railings will be going out of business soon....well be gasing off all the railings soon to get enough steel

I just fell into a swoon, when quoted £52 inc VAt for a 2 meter piece of 6mm angle iron 75x50mm.
He also said something about them doing 12 meter long pieces, so maybe its a case of you might as well buy the entire length as you'll get charged for it ?! Or am i that out of touch ?

If its not in stock, chances are they will charge you for the whole bar, or part bar, plus delivery to them.
at a guess, id say that was reasonably cheap for a 12m length.
But once its there, how much will they charge you to gas it into sensible size pieces!
You should be able to get shorther lengths in angle that size, they come in 6.1, 12.2 for definate, i cant remember if they do 7.6 and 9m in angle....

Oh they definately had it in stock, there were lorries being loaded and going in and out all the while i was there. There must have been thousands of tons of steel all around the insides of the large wherehouse. My brother only lives 500 yards away so i'd carry it to his place rather that pay to have it cut and delvered. I suppose they have a scam going where foot customers wanting small ammounts are given off-cuts and charged the full ammount.
Anyway at the moment im after sheet steel. i have a door from an 18 gauge steel locker that im gonna Nitromors then use for inner sills on my Rover P6

The problem then, is its a big place. They have so many overheads, then need to charge that to make it worth theire while.
I always say to people, find a nice friendly fab shop, you more likely to get small bits, and look through the racks. As well as they are probably happier to deal in a bit of the folding stuff.

We are now being quoted £800.00/tonne by Corus - thats up from £500.00/tonne last christmas.

The bigger stockholders are making a fortune at the moment. say they keep 100,000t in stock, and the price rise by £25/ton they've made another £250,000!
I think the £800/ton is an average, depending on what your buying, PFC's have rocketed lately so im told,well over £1000/ton!

Good news for a change - steel prices dropped in September, and are continuing to do so.
Bad news is that scrap prices are following so if you have some to weigh in, do it now.
