I have asked my old collage lecturer who in later life became a fellow of the institute of meturologisits, metal oligists, metallists, he knows a bit about steel, I will post his reply if he is still alive!

Attached is a printout from one my books. It looks like the steel is either AISI 8740 or AISI 8742. It is hardenable and readily available on the market. Many UK companies manufacture it. If you want more info, I will dig deeper.
