Steel gate

We're remaking a decorative steel gate, about 6' x 3' wide. The outer frame on the existing (very rusty) gate is 20mm x 20mm. Should that be solid steel, or hollow box section? If the latter, will 2.5mm thickness be adequate?

I’d make it from solid bar, I’d use 16mm square or possibly 25mm x 10mm flat, depends on what you want it to look like.

If you need to use box - I avoid it like the plague - I use 3mm wall, that’s the smallest I can successfully arc weld, I don’t have MIG.
