To cut a long story short I built this last year.

Then the time comes to order the 2 post lift which is what led to this building being built in the first place from all those years of working outside and wanting my own dry space with the lift.... and the one I decided on was out of stock. I set an email alert up to notify me when they are back in stock. I keep checking for weeks but still no stock. Then one day at work I check and they are showing as in stock. But my notification never came. I rang up to check and they say they have so many customers after the lifts they have only sent out half of the notifications to let them know but she assures me they are in stock. I get the lift ordered and there’s a note which says there is no extra postage to pay if you order any of the other things I was thinking about getting so I order an oil drainer that pumps oil out too, a hydraulic coil spring compressor, transmission jack and some adapters for the lift to cradle chassis rails which will be handy for my Hilux. By this point I have spent months and months working on my garage project, nothing much else gets done, im either at work, working on my garage or working on my garage when I should be at work. Luckily I had a few folk who were willing to help me out when I needed help with it. But my poor Hilux has been neglected, the alternator is dying and the holes in the chassis and bed don’t get welded up as I have no time to do it and I refuse to work outside on it when before long I will have a good garage with a lift to do it all. So it sits for months and the MOT expires and I don’t even have any of my cars on the road I can use. Luckily I can walk and get the bus to work.

Eventually the weather warms up just enough and I get the floor cleaned off, etched, x2 coats of sealer applied, and the first coat of fuel and oil resistant paint, I then blinded it with kiln dried sand and left it to dry. I ran a space heater for a few days to get the temperature right up to keep it warm in there. Then brush all the excess sand off and put the second coat on. The finish doesn’t look as good as I hoped but the sand has done a great job of making a nice grippy floor.

I then dug the garden up and ran a 25mm cable from the house to the garage, only single phase unfortunately as the power company wanted over 30k to put it to the house which is crazy, so I got the main supply fuse upped from 60 amps to 100amps. I connected the consumer unit up and started wiring some basic power in to get me away with some 13amp plugs, the lights, roller doors, and my lift with a 16amp plug for my mig welder so I can make a start on the Hilux.
This about brings us to where we are now. There are still a lot of flashing to fit on the outside of the building, and still another bay to add on the end which will just have a roof over it. But already I am thinking about extending the garage and adding the extra bay on but not adding another roller door. Maybe that will be next year’s job. I also want to add an upstairs to the first bay.
For now I still have a lot of work to get it setup nice and put power where I will need it. I’m also going to look for a lathe something like a Colchester Triumph, a plasma table as i have a hyperthem 85, and a tyre machine to go with the balancer I picked up a bit ago.
I had never built anything like this before and it certainly hasn’t been easy but I think the building has gone up pretty well.
