Steel easier than Ally?

I've done a bit of ally welding before, with average results. I now need to weld some 2 and 3mm steel. I had someone lined up to MIG it for me, but he keeps letting me down. So I may try to tig instead.

But before I start, and maybe make a mess of it, am I likely to do a decent job? Anything special I need to look out for? Will it be as strong as a Mig weld?

Steel is much easier to get a bead started on and easier to see the weld pool.

It will be just as strong as MIG assuming the weld is sound.

Wouldn't worry about the strength, if you do it right the weld will be far better/stronger than you would get with MIG

I had that too - I found steel much more difficult than aluminium. For me it was the arc length that was much too long. Check out http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/tig-tutorial.htm and practice a fillet weld in steel without filler. That's what worked for me.
