Steel eagle finished

Here it is then. After many hours of graft i finally got it finished and hung up. I made a salmon for its talons which i think sets it of well. I did this by cutting 2 halves of the fish out and beat them with a ball pein hammer till they bent out. I then welded the 2 together and added the fins. Only took about 2 hours and the ball pein hammer gives it a great scale effect. I have now started an eagle owl sculpture which i will post pics of today

Its mild steel. I was gonna rust it but i quite like the sheen so thinking of waxoil or similar to keep the sheen but open to suggestions...

I love rusted steel, then waxed over the top to create a satin rust finish!! Very nice for wildlife sculptures, quite organic.... but, I also love the look of steel, all silvery, but have never used a finish that stands the long test of time (outdoors anyway) that will keep it like that!! (I've not really experimented as such either, just the usual stuff, clear coats, urethanes, acrylics, I find after a while they let the water in and the steel succumbs to the elements) Never used waxoil as a finish, only had it put on the underside of my car!! All my outdoor stuff ends up getting galv'd or hot zinc sprayed and/or painted if the customers don't want rust.

Its a great piece of work, you should be proud!!

Not nearly enough!! I have done in the past but these days I just never get enough time in the workshop and lately have been doing lots of fire sets and hooks, candlestands and small stuff, most of my work is ornamental anyway, so things like flowers etc, so it's enjoyable but what I'd love to be doing all day long is big sculptures...

Nice one.
I reckon rusted is better than painted.
Have a go at using satin yacht varnish on some lightly rusted steel. This gives a nice almost bronze look.

Hi, cut them with plasma, wouldnt fancy the snips to do that. Plasma the best investment i ever made. I have been offered a grand for it but loads of folk reckon about 3 grand. Have to be in the right place like some gallery i suppose but you know what... its my first attempt and i think i would hate to part with it.
